My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Micah / Male / 3 years old / 66 pounds / Mixed Breed / Likely Good with Other Dogs / Good With Cats (with supervision) / Untested with Kids / Fostered in Scarborough / From Tennessee

Meet Micah! This unique beauty was found as a stray in Tennessee and has made the journey to Ontario in search of his forever home. While we don’t know much about Micah’s past, his striking looks and unique personality ensure that he is destined to become a beloved pet.

Micah’s foster describes him as initially reserved but once he is comfortable he is very sweet and affectionate. He likes to know where his foster is in the home and follows her around. He gets bursts of playful energy but is generally calm and well mannered in the home. Micah loves toys and most games but is partial to “find it”. He is also learning the joys of fetch. He is an active guy and appreciates lots of play time, as well as enrichment activities like snuffle mat, kong tire, and bully sticks. Micah loves sitting by the patio door and watching the backyard, barking at the occasional squirrel.

Micah is still learning how to walk properly on leash and this is a work in progress. While he thrives in the backyard, he can be hesitant or unsure when out on leash. He is not reactive but will stop walking and lean into his foster whenever he is unsure about something. His foster is working with him on this by taking him on familiar routes and giving lots of praise and patience. He is making great progress and once he is more comfortable, we anticipate he will enjoy long walks as he is an active guy!

Micah does well in the house and has been left crated up to 3 hours and in a doggy proof space for up to 3 hours. He has not been destructive but should not be left with access to anything he should not chew on. He is also a bit of a counter surfer but is very responsive to redirection. Micah sleeps through the night in his crate without issue. He is fully potty trained. Micah gets a little anxious getting into the car and may need to be lifted in. Once he is in he has not shown any signs of nerves or carsickness. We believe this will improve as he continues to get used to the car.

Micah lived with another dog at the rescue in Tennessee but has not interacted with many dogs since coming into foster care. We believe he could join a family with another well-adjusted dog with proper intros, but would also be fine as the only dog soaking up all the attention. Micah currently lives with a cat, though they are kept separate. When they are introduced, Micah definitely seems interested but will leave the cat alone and not fixate on her. Micah has not met children since being in care but would likely be fine with older, dog-savvy children.

Micah is a special boy and is working so hard on becoming the best version of himself. He would benefit from an active family who likes to go on adventures outside the city. He needs a family that is committed to his ongoing training, which includes basic commands, as well as getting more comfortable on leash. He would do best in a home with a yard so he can spend time outside while he get more accustomed to walking on leash. As a condition of his adoption, Micah is required to wear a Tractive brand GPS collar. The cost of the device and subscription will be the responsibility of his adoptive family.

Additional adoption info

To adopt one of our dogs, please fill out an application at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form. Although we do our best to reply to all inquiries within 72 hours, please remember we are a volunteer-run organization. We appreciate your patience.

If we think your application has potential to be a good fit, a Fetch + Releash volunteer will contact you to set up a time to speak over the phone and conduct the home visit. In addition to the phone interview and home visit, we also require personal, veterinarian, and landlord reference if applicable.

After the phone interview, home visit & reference check, you will then be granted a private meet and greet with the dog.

After the meet and greet, the adoption committee will then review your completed application and make a final decision.

More about this rescue

Established in 2016, Fetch + Releash is a volunteer run dog rescue dedicated to saving dogs in need. Our foster dogs come from a variety of different backgrounds such as shelters, strays and surrendered pets, both locally and abroad. Through our network of volunteers, foster homes, trainers and veterinarians, we strive to give every dog the loving forever family they deserve. As a foster-based rescue, our dogs live in private homes across the Greater Toronto Area where they receive the love and attention they need to ready them for adoption.

A dog is a lifetime commitment and not to be discarded due to health, lifestyle change or inconvenience. Some of the top reasons dogs end up in shelters are lack of training, lifestyle changes (i.e. new baby, marriage), relocation, cost of dog ownership, not enough time for pet etc. Our goal is to ensure our adoptive families are well versed in the realities of dog ownership and ready to make a lifetime commitment.
