My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Buttercup is a sweet heart but she is a little shy. She doesn`t like doing new things and will need time warming up. Buttercup needs a home that is quiet and patient. Buttercup is good with other dogs. If you would like to meet Buttercup, call the LPCHS front desk or walk-in today to schedule an appointment!

From her recent foster outing:
`This Saturday LPCHS had arranged for one of their pups to pose for a drawing class at the Durango Arts Center. It is always challenging to pick the right dog (mostly because there are so many amazing candidates).

We finally settled on Buttercup. Although shy, this 1 1/2 yr old female happened to be the perfect fit.

It was my first time taking her in my car. She was uncomfortable, fidgeted and cried a bit on the way to the event. Most likely not used to automobiles. Once on 2nd Street, Buttercup, relieved to be out, found that there was a lot going on around us and remained nervous while we walked around the block.

We showed up at the event early for her to get accustomed to her new surroundings.
Once Buttercup got the lay of the land, she laid down on her bed in front of the students.
The class was terrific, studious but fun. And with classical music in the background, Buttercup started to relax. I even caught her snoozing....
She remained totally calm for the entire session, 1 and 1/2 hour and was finally greeted by the 8 people who took part in the class. Buttercup raised $80 for the shelter.

We are so grateful to the people who donated and the Durango Arts Center.

On our way back to the shelter, Buttercup was quiet and calm. Her confidence was definitely back after this interesting outing.`

to me, Liza, Foster

Today, due to the Fire Alarm drill scheduled at the shelter, our volunteer coordinator made sure all dogs would have a friend to take them out for an hour or so, thus avoiding additional stress. I previously mentioned Buttercup, a resident at Humane. She was my buddy today. I was amazed to witness a pretty confident girl, ready to enjoy the River Path despite the snow and drizzle. Buttercup was wearing a very fitting outfit which might have helped her take the hedge off. We walked all the way to Home Depot where I needed to return an item. We met another 4 legged Humane resident in one of the aisles. Buttercup befriended him right

More about this shelter

La Plata County Humane Society was established as a 501(c) 3 animal shelter in 1971. The humane society was created to provide shelter for homeless animals, rescue animals in distress, assist in the investigation and prosecution of reported cruelty and abuse, find homes for unwanted animals, and encourage kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education.

The Thrift Store was established in 1990 to raise monies for the homeless animals. They sell gently-used goods donated by our community. We accept donations 7 days a week through our on-site drive through donation center. The Thrift Store helps to support other local non-profits in the community by donating clothing, toiletries and vouchers to the Volunteers of America (VOA), La Plata Family Coalition, the Women’s Resource Center and many other non-profits.

The Shelter & Thrift Store are directed by nine elected board members. In 2000, a veterinarian was added to our staff to insure that all animals have a health and wellness check, are spayed or neutered, provided initial vaccines, implanted with a identification microchip and have the best quality care before leaving our facility. We are committed to helping animals become their best selves before they are adopted into forever homes.
