Meet Oreo!
Oreo is a fun and friendly boy who was brought into an animal control facility outside Chicago as a stray. He was microchipped, but sadly when his owner was contacted they said they no longer wanted him. While at the shelter, it was discovered that not only was Oreo uncomfortable from his matting, but he had many bladder stones which can be extremely painful. The shelter staff shaved Oreo down to relieve him from his matted fur and decided the best thing for Oreo would be to find a rescue to take him for medical treatment. NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue sprang into action and agreed to rescue Oreo. He went straight from animal control to the vet where he underwent surgery that same night, having 19 bladder stones removed from his bladder and urethra!
Since surgery, Oreo has recovered marvelously and his foster mom says his personality has blossomed. He is confident, silly, and affectionate. Oreo is a bit of a social butterfly and greets everyone he meets happily. He has been polite with all humans and dogs he has met thus far, including older (9+), respectful children, and we believe he would fit well in most home settings. Oreo walks well on a leash, but is just as happy to do his business in a backyard.
Oreo loves his toys - he is happy to play some fetch and will hoard his favorites in his bed with him. After playtime Oreo will settle nicely either on the couch with his people or in his own bed. He is somewhat vocal, and will bark when he wants something (mostly for you to play with him or take him outside). He is not crate trained, however he is housebroken and does not cause any trouble when he is left out so crating is not necessary.
The vet estimates that Oreo is around 9 years old. He was recently neutered and had a dental cleaning with 10 extractions. Oreo only has 4 teeth left (which has helped him perfect his #tongueouttuesday pose), but otherwise in good health. He will need to be on a special diet for the rest of his life to help prevent the recurrence of the bladder stones, and will need semi-yearly checkups with testing to monitor this condition.
Oreo does not let his condition hold him back, and his energy and love for everyone and everything proves it! Nineteen bladder stones and ten teeth later, Oreo is looking for one home to call his forever - could it be yours?
