My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

She is calm, easy-going, smart, cat and dog friendly, loves long naps and is both house and crate trained! Perfection! Chefs kiss! Dreamy! And available for adoption. Opal is her name and she is a gorgeous gem! I think I fell for her as soon as I saw how she melts into a puddle of love when she senses potential for a belly rub. That paired with her incredibly calm, almost zen-like presence equals something real special.

When we are getting to know a dog we like to cover all the key elements of a dogs personality, leash walking, dog-friendliness, level of affection seeking, cat-tolerance etc. Introducing you to Opal within those “categories” really helps give you a thorough insight. Opal has spent her waiting-days in a loving foster home which has gave her such an amazing head start and a true view into who she is in a home. Starting with leash walking, Opal gets regular walks and has great basic leash skills and an easy pace. An occasional squirrel will catch her attention but she is happy to watch it run, maybe imagining what it might be like to chase it. Living with other dogs shows us she is dog-friendly and during her assessment she showed the same. She is more of a company-type, not the bouncy playmate some dogs need. She is companionship for all from dog to cat and people alike. She doesn’t want to bother anyone, just be near. A dedicated family means she is both house and crate trained, and has great house-manners.

When it comes to his personality, Opal is best described as easy-going and calm. When meeting new people she is friendly and is somehow both friendly and shy- a very cute combination! The same can be said for how she approaches dogs. She wants other dogs to know she is a friend and approaches calmly, almost submissively. Great with other dogs, she is also content in her own company and would be perfectly happy as your one and only. Estimated to be in her senior years, possibly right around 7, she is ready for the calm days of “retirement.” Weighing 63 lbs she is perfect snuggle size without being imposing. When introduced to our house cat, Opal was curious but respectful and lost interest quickly. She did not attempt to pursue the cat as he walked around or when he jumped to a higher surface. From our observation Opal appears to be cat-tolerant and could easily live in a home with a feline-friend.

Given she is likely some type of German shepherd mix, she does have a bark she will occasionally use. According to her foster it is reserved for very few occasions and she takes correction well, quieting quickly. together, which will also help Haku's confidence grow.

Opal’s sweet and gentle nature translates beautifully into a home environment. She is great with people, no stranger danger here, and I could see her being great with kids, especially those who are respectful of her older age. Her calm nature makes her a gentle companion for a family, a couple or a single person. Who doesn’t need a chill companion for naps and walks?

Opal is a loving, gentle, and intelligent girl who will bring a calm ease to your life and home.

If you have any questions or would like us to test Opal in a specific setting, please get in touch. We can make most anything happen to ensure she is the correct fit for you and your life!

Why adopt from Three Little Pitties?

The stray and animal overpopulation in the Greater Houston area is the highest in the nation. Statistics show that there are over 1 million homeless animals in this region alone. Three Little Pitties Rescue is a nonprofit dog and cat rescue that partners with the community to make a difference. Our mission is to reduce the homeless pet population through community outreach, free spay and neuter services, and saving all breeds of dogs and cats from the streets or animal shelters that oftentimes have no other option but to euthanize animals for space. This dog you’ve found online is lucky to be in our program, and even luckier to have you notice it!

Three Little Pitties wants to set you and your new pet up for success! We know our dogs and we work hard to prepare them socially for adoption. We are a network of dedicated people who are heavily invested in seeing our animals thrive. From the moment they are accepted into our program, our Intake, Behavior & Medical teams prepare them for adoption by properly vetting, behaviorally assessing, and providing customized plans depending on the dog’s needs. We seek to adopt to families who understand that these are rescue dogs and will require continued training efforts, but will be well on their way to being the best dogs that they can be!

It doesn’t stop there! Our adopters also receive these special perks:

• 30 day trial of pet insurance with Trupanion (must register within 24 hours of first vet appt.)
• A free private online dog training session with GoodPup plus low pricing for future sessions (approx $25 weekly for an 8 week course of one session per week)
• One free bonus toy in every BarkBox when signing up for their Super Chewer subscription plan
• 70% off of your first order of Fetch, a PNW based, organic fresh dog food loaf meal subscription plan
• Coupons for a fun visit to Petco
• Access to our exclusive FB Adopters page, where you can network for play dates, resources, and connect with other adopters that share their passion for their adopted pup!

We celebrated our 5 year anniversary this year! Through the combined efforts of all of our hardworking staff and volunteers, we have placed over 12,000 very lucky dogs and cats into amazing homes! By adopting from us, you save TWO lives! The pet you adopt, and you create an opportunity for another animal to be saved in that spot. Together, we can be heroes.
