My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

My heart aches for Mia, a young pup who has faced unimaginable loss. She comes from a home where her owner tragically succumbed to drug addiction. This sweet girl had formed a close bond with a young child, who has now been taken away and placed into foster care, leaving Mia feeling abandoned and alone. The foster family is unable to take her in, which is heartbreaking, especially at a time when both the child and this frightened dog need each other the most.

At just six to eight months old, Mia is a heeler/Aussie mix with a playful spirit and a few tricks up her sleeve. However, her current situation has left her feeling lost and terrified. She is house trained, but the trauma of her past has made her wary of new environments. Mia has interacted with both small dogs and those her size, but her fear often manifests in a warning growl, signaling her need for patience and understanding from potential adopters.

Mia deserves a loving home where she can feel safe and begin to trust again. It’s crucial for her future family to understand her breed and the unique needs that come with it. If you believe you can provide the nurturing environment she requires, consider applying to foster her through the link provided. Together, we can help Mia find the love and stability she so desperately needs.

Bit of an update as of 09/24/2024: Mia is an excellent girl, she needs another dog to bond with in a home and gets along with all dogs large and small. This girl ADORES children and is most comfortable with kids.  Adults take her a moment to warm up to. She does need an environment in which she can work, town is not the place for her. Give her a ranch, acreage over that and she is going to be one phenomenal girl.  With proper training, she would be an excellent working dog, her brain is always processing and thinking, she has a very independent spirit, yet her kind personality continues to shine.

More about this rescue

Founded in May of 2004 by Floss Blackburn, Denkai Animal Sanctuary has enjoyed a long running successful path in providing life saving services for domestic animals in crisis throughout the United States and Mexico.

In the formative years, Denkai established in Weld County, CO having purchased three facilities totaling over 640 acres, performing farming, conservation, large animal rescue, pet animal rescue and low-cost veterinary care for the area, Denkai quickly established as the largest and most diverse organization of its kind in the area.

Seeing a gap in services and need for a strong presence in Montezuma County, Denkai's board of directors voted to relocate the organization in 2017 to Yellow Jacket, CO. In three short years, Denkai has expanded to a second location in Cortez, CO. This location at 209 West Main was purchased in September of 2020 with the help of Region 9 and First National Bank of Cortez.

Denkai Yellow Jacket - Houses, Rehabilitates Equine and Farm Animal rescues.

Denkai -Cortez, CO - This is our 16,000 sf retail center - The store boasts an adoption center for rescued dogs and cats and sells retail pet supplies, accepts donations of used items, and provides low cost programs such as pet food and vaccinations for low income pet owners.
