Elmer is a friendly, large Shepherd/Great Dane mix who shows us signs he's had a rough history. He was adopted from us as a puppy in 2020, and from what we have gathered, he has since been given away to live in a chicken coop where he eventually escaped and roamed the town for a while until he was picked up and taken to Siloam Springs Pound. Fortunately, they scanned him for a microchip and traced it back to us. A dedicated volunteer of ours rushed to pick Elmer up and brought him to our shelter. He was skin and bones, and you could tell he was scared. The short amounts of time we've been able to spend with Elmer, for the month he's been here, has done so much for him. He loves human attention, walks great on leash, rides very well in the car, and we're slowly getting weight back on his bones. Elmer's reaction to cats and children is unknown. We tested his interactions with 2 other dog-friendly dogs on 9/24 and immediately decided he is OVERLY friendly, if you know what we mean.. We are worried that another dog might get scared of Elmer, being as large as he is and hovering over them, and trigger him to react in a negative way.. but we don't know whats behind this current behavior. We don't know how life was for him prior to his intake. Any adoption to a home with other pets will require a slow and proper introduction. Elmer is very smart, very easy going and laid back, would make somebody a great companion pet and wants all the love he can get!
