My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Lyra! This 16 week, 22 pound, Shepherd mix is the sweetest puppy with quite a bit of growing left to do! Although she is such a young pup, she has learned so much since coming into rescue and is eager to continue learning how to be a rockstar dog! She’s the most eager to please out of her siblings, making her a very trainable puppy!

Lyra is so gentle with every dog and person she meets. She loves to meet new people and loves kids and dogs alike! She is also very attentive and ready to listen and learn at every opportunity. She is the first of her siblings to learn every new trick her foster family teaches. She’s mastered sit, down, shake and is 90% there with stay! Lyra is potty trained and working on crate training. But of her siblings, she needs another dog nearby to settle. If she is by herself without another dog in a crate nearby she will sing you the song of her people forever.

Lyra is also the most attached to her foster home's resident dog. She loves to curl up next to him and she is the first to greet him in the morning or choose him over play time with her siblings. For that reason, she really does need another dog in the house. As far as cats go, she has limited experience. She’s been largely uninterested in the ones she’s met and would likely do well in a home with cats. Lyra also has limited experience with children but has been very gentle with the one’s she has met. Since she’s still growing and learning, we recommend slow and supervised introductions with any new kids she meets.

Due to Lyra’s likely breed makeup, she’s been known to be vocal when interacting with her foster family and resident dogs. For this reason, she may not be a candidate for shared walls. It’s also ideal that Lyra have access to a fenced yard with outdoor space to explore and burn off extra energy. Her ideal forever home will be one that’s dedicated to meeting her activity needs and continued training.

Lyra’s ready to meet her forever family! With patience and consistent training, she will be sure to develop into the perfect dog anyone could ask for. If you’re interested in learning more about Lyra and think she might be a good fit, fill out an application using the link below to learn more! Whoever becomes his family will be lucky they did.

The adoption fee is $550. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
