Meet Leo! This 16 week-old, 27 pound Shepherd mix got his name Leo the Lionheart due to his gentle nature and perseverance. He and his siblings have had a rough start to life but have begun to flourish since coming into rescue. Leo is looking for a forever family who will be dedicated to his continued training and showering him with love!
With a little time and a few doggy play dates, Leo has come out of his shell and has become quite the social butterfly. And he’s very happy to strut around and let you know! He is fully crate trained and potty trained and is ready to impress you learning tricks if there is a tasty treat involved.
Leo has a lot of puppy energy to burn, so he would thrive in a home with a resident dog to play with, or with a family who can keep up during playtime too! Since coming into rescue, Leo has made tremendous progress and has shown to be a happy pup who values his playtime as much as his cuddle time. He’s been introduced to a couple of confident cats and has been interested. He’d likely do well in a home with dog savvy cats with proper introductions and boundaries. As far as children go, he’s had limited interactions so far but has done well. Due to his age, he’s still quite mouthy and will need to learn boundaries around kids.
Due to Leo’s breed, he’s been known to be fairly vocal when interacting with his foster family (especially around dinner time!) For this reason, he may not be a candidate for shared walls. It’s also ideal that Leo has access to a fenced yard with outdoor space to explore and burn off extra energy. His ideal forever home will be one that’s dedicated to meeting his activity needs and continued training.

The adoption fee is $550. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.
Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.
Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.
We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.
We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
