My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Introducing Hennessy!

Affectionate Velcro Dane Silly Active

Hi, I’m Hennessy, a sweet and loving Great Dane with a playful side that always keeps my family laughing. I love being close to my people at all times. I’m known to be a bit of a bed hog—sometimes snuggling, sometimes sprawling out—but always wanting to be close. I may get a little unsure in new situations, but with some reassurance, my goofy and affectionate personality shines through.

When meeting new people, I like to be the one in charge of the introduction. I might growl at first to let you know I’m here, but once you say my name and acknowledge me, I’m totally fine. I’m also working with my vet to figure out if my eyesight might be contributing to that reaction. If my forever family were to have any kids, I’d feel most comfortable if the kids are aged 13 or older.

I get along the best with smaller, non-aggressive dogs and I’m not always sure how I feel about bigger dogs—especially if they have a dominant personality. I’d do great as the only dog in the house since I love getting all the attention. I have lived with a cat, and while I’m cool with it most of the time, I do get a bit bossy if the cat tries to take my stuff or get more attention than me!

I’m all about adventure—car rides with the windows down, walks, and playing with my plush toys are some of my favorite things! I also love a good game of tug-of-war or zooming around the yard. I’m a fan of camping and spending time outdoors, but busy or crowded environments make me a little anxious. I prefer calm, familiar places where I can relax. And just so you know, I don’t mind baths and I LOVE snuggling on the bed.

When it comes to training, I know my basic commands like sit, ignore, down, and stay, but I can be a little picky about when I follow them—especially if I don’t see any treats! I’m housebroken and crate-trained, though if you let me roam the house unattended, I might get into a little trouble. I walk on a leash, but my style is more “drunken sailor”—I might sway a bit, but I don’t pull. I also have some resource-guarding behaviors, which could be linked to my potentially limited vision.

I’ve got a sensitive stomach, so I stick to a special diet that keeps me feeling good. No poultry for me, please—it doesn’t agree with me. I also have skin sensitivities that are managed with some natural treatments like essential oils. I shake my head a lot because I have some extra skin in my ears, but that’s just part of my charm! As for my sight, it’s not perfect, but I rely on my nose and your voice to know who’s around. My vet is still working on figuring out exactly what’s going on with my eyes.

My perfect forever home would be calm and quiet, where I can feel safe and build my confidence. I’d love to be the only dog or have a smaller, chill dog friend. Kids should be at least 13 years old. While I don’t need a physical fence, it is recommended for when I’m outside playing. I’m housebroken, crate-trained, and would be happy in any yard size.

If you love camping and are looking for a funny, lovable companion to stick by your side, I might just be your perfect match! If you think we’d be a great fit, I can’t wait to meet you!

Hennessy’s forever family should be patient, reassuring, and willing to help her continue building her confidence in new situations. If you believe Hennessy will be a perfect fit for your family, please reach out to us by following one of the options below.

More about this rescue

Upper Midwest Great Dane Rescue was started in 2008 by a group of Dane lovers who desire to help Danes in need. The rescue is made up of all volunteers who lovingly give of their time and money to help these wonderful dogs. Volunteers include people from every walk of life, all with one thing in common, love of Great Danes.

Each animal coming to the rescue is temperament tested, given a physical, vaccinated, wormed, checked for heartworm and tick borne illnesses and treated as needed. All dogs are sterilized before being re homed. The dog is then placed in a foster home to wait for someone to love it forever.
