My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Brownie ACCT-A-175012 is a 4-year-old male that came in as an owner surrender due to moving on 9/19. The owner stated that Brownie "fights at times, barks at strangers, children, other dogs, and cats, and would be good with a home for an older person. Brownie is a sweetheart with people and is just waiting to open up! He's really taking a lot of time to adjust to his new environment, and it's clearly stressing him out horribly. It's hard for him to work past his nerves but with just a little patience (and a lot of cheese), he'll allow you into his heart. For anyone with flexibility and a lot of compassion, Brownie would be perfect for you!

Behavior notes:

BEHAVIOR EVALUATION (9/20)

KNOWN HISTORY:
Owner surrender - got in a dog fight with another resident dog, does not walk well on leash

KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Brownie was curled up on his bed when I approached. He looked up with semi soft eyes, but did not come forward. I tossed him some treats but he wasn't interested, so I returned with some cheese and he did take that. Slowly, he came forward and took treats from my hand. He was very nervous of the leash, but I was able to lasso him easily. He did not want to leave kennel once secured, and he does not respond well to leash pressure. He will thrash, gator roll, and bite the leash when he feels leash pressure, so I used a trial of treats and took my time getting him to come out. It took 5+ minutes, but eventually he came out on his own.

LEASH SKILLS:
Brownie is unaccustomed to the leash, and will thrash, gator roll, and bite the leash when he feels leash pressure. I was able to build enough of a relationship with him through giving him cheese that he allowed me to pick him up and carry him outside.

HANDLING:
Once outside I gave Brownie some time and space to approach me on his own. He approached me after only a couple minutes, and stood near me with tail low, eyes semi soft, and body neutral. He took cheese from me very gently, but wasn't interested in other treats. He sniffed around the yard for a bit, but after a few minutes climbed up on the bench next to me. He laid next to me with his head near my leg, but was still very nervous of touch. He shied away and gave some whale eye when I reached to pet him, so I continued giving treats and going slow. He nuzzled his face into my leg and when I pet his head, he started leaning in. He put his head on the laptop and looked up with big, sweet eyes. He allowed all handling after I gave him lots of cheese and time to adjust. Brownie needs a lot of time, food, and quiet to calm down and open up.

PLAY
No interest, too fearful

TOYS:
No interest, too fearful

Staff noted on 9/19:
"9/19 3pm Staff raised concerns about the behavior of the three dogs, including Brownie, when they first got off the UHaul. When I came out Brownie was standing with four people around him (but at a distance). They stated he had significantly calmed down at this point. I let him sniff me a few times, and then I pet him and he was tense, but allowed it. He relaxed a bit as I continued to pet him. I would start and stop petting him and he eventually just lay down. He walked back inside following a trail of treats".

Staff noted on 9/19:
"Brownie was initially very fearful outside, but with time and a lot of patience he warms up and allows all handling".

Per owner on 9/19:
"Owner stated that all the dogs fight each other. Had attacked each other on the way here and are injured".

Owner stated on 9/19 that he "fights at times, barks at strangers, children, other dogs, and cats, and would be good with a home for an older person".

Medical notes:

On 9/25, Brownie was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection. PCR test results showed he was positive for pneumovirus, and he was relocated to an ISO kennel.

Per intake exam on 9/19:

"- Ears havepreviously treated EKT , small lesion on R penna
- Moderate dental staining some tarter on back
- Large amount of feces caked onto fur
- Right hock swollen
- BAR (bright, alert, responsive), nervous but highly food motivated
- Overall assessment: Fearful but allowed vaccines with minimal restraint and food
