My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Travis is a neutered male, about 2 years old, weighs 69 pounds. He is primarily German Shepherd, but also has a little bit of Husky and Staffie in him too. He is currently located at Search Dog Foundation in Santa Paula, CA. This is a Courtesy Post for Search Dog Foundation.

Travis is a hunky hunk and he has all the things we love about German Shepherds…he is handsome, loyal, intelligent, trainable, soft to touch, and very playful.

His original family raised him from puppyhood but couldn’t take him with them when they had to move out of state. The staff at the shelter in Los Angeles noticed his love of toys in addition to his ‘good boy’ temperament. They referred him to us (Search Dog Foundation), and we snapped him right up. The Search Dog Foundation is a working dog training center in Santa Paula, CA and we train dogs for search and rescue work.  However, Travis didn’t pass our extremely stringent medical clearance (due to a spot of arthritis in one of his hips that showed up in his x-rays) so we are hoping to help him find his perfect person(s) who will enjoy and appreciate him as much as we do. He did get adopted out from us, but came back when the older couple realized he was a little’ too much’ dog for their home, although they had nothing but good things to say about him…

He is a sweet and playful boy who will catch a ball, play chase, tug a little (if you want him to). Besides looking a little like a teddy bear, he also looks much bigger in his photos than he is in real life. He’s actually a nice size (66 lbs) with a beautiful coat and soft loving eyes.

He has a nice off switch and once he has decided you are worth his time, he is very affectionate (isn’t that just SO shepherd…?)

His only bugaboo? He will need some further work on his leash skills.

Travis is a fine dog who will thrive in an active environment with a normal exercise routine, just nothing too high impact (jumping off rubble piles and such…)

Calling all Shepherd lovers! Don’t let this one get away!

Kids? Older would be better, he is a big dog and quite physical.

Cats? We cat tested him, he will need a slow and supervised introduction, but we think he would be ok. There were 2 cats in his adoptive home and he had been in the process of getting used to them. No disasters to report.

Dog: He definitely could use some socializing with other dogs. He’s a little rough around the edges in this area. If another dog was in the home, we would definitely suggest a long and slow introduction process.

Travis will be waiting in Santa Paula CA.

We are all working toward finding that perfect match!

You want to find that great dog that you and your family will love for many years. We want to find that great family that will offer our dog the very best home.

Go meet their pets

We don't have a lot of events or meet-and-greets. We may do a few a year however we want our meetings to be as calm and natural as possible. We have found that large events are extremely overstimulating and distracting for most dogs and not the best place to meet. We prefer to meet in environments that allow more one-on-one, direct interaction so you get a feel of how the dog will respond you and your family.

More about this rescue

We love German Shepherd Dogs for all the same reasons you are looking here today. They are loyal, intelligent and beautiful animals. They can be big goofballs, feisty spitfires, working dogs, sport enthusiasts, movie critics, couch warmers, dock divers, scent detectors, hiking buddies, travelers, family protectors......you name it, the GSD can do it. If you are lucky enough to have a GSD in your life you will understand just how special they are.

We are a 501(c)(3) 100% volunteer organization. We began our mission in 2013 with the dream of saving as many of these beautiful and often misunderstood dogs as we could. We are a small rescue but we have a mighty team and we have saved over 2,000 dogs!

Most of our dogs come from shelters local to our rescue. There are many reasons dogs end up in shelters and we find most of them are not the fault of the dog. Are there purebred GSDs in shelters? ABSOLUTELY. Are there good dogs in shelters? There are GREAT dogs in shelters. Some of our dogs come from owners who, for many reasons, can no longer care for them and ask our help in finding a new loving forever home. The good news is that we encounter few dogs that have been abused or seriously mistreated.

Each dog that comes into our program is carefully evaluated and then placed into a foster home when available. Foster homes are critical for our rescue and it's the best way to really get to know the dog. If we don't have an appropriate foster home available, we will temporarily use one of our approved boarding/daycare facilities while getting to know the dog and waiting for a foster home to become available. We do not warehouse our dogs! Every dog in our care gets one-on-one attention from our volunteers/fosters. They are socialized, vetted, allowed to decompress and show us who they really are. Once we have spent some time getting to know each dog, we make the dog available for adoption.

If you aren't ready to adopt but still want to help, please consider fostering a GSD. We have all types of GSD's, from older 'fireside' dogs to younger puppies full of puppy energy. Fosters are truly the backbone of a rescue and without fosters, we would not be able to save these wonderful dogs. The rescue pays for all costs and will provide everything needed. All you need to provide is a safe, loving environment. Our dogs are in a foster home anywhere from a week to several months and we provide relief fosters if you have an emergency or need to be away from home for a few days. If you have ever thought about fostering, now is the time as there are record -breaking (and heartbreaking) numbers of dogs in shelters that need a second chance. Please consider becoming a foster home.

As a non-profit rescue, we are extremely grateful to our donors. Without YOU there would be no US. All donations are tax deductible and used for vetting, food, training, etc. We have no paid staff. The majority of our costs are medical as each dog receives required vaccinations, age and health appropriate spay/neuter, flea/tick treatment, heartworm testing and monthly treatment, worming and microchip. We often take dogs that need additional medical treatment and we also get dogs that have unknown issues that need to be treated. Your donations help us help those that need us most. A leg will heal and a heart will heal and our donors make it all possible.

And of course, we always need volunteers to help us transport, groom, walk, play with, train and on the "non" contact side, adoption counselors, fundraising, grant writing, social media....you name it we most likely need it. Even an hour a week makes a difference and we're with you every step of the way.

Our motto has always been "IT'S ALL ABOUT THE DOGS" and we live by it. Our dogs have always been and will always be our #1 priority.

Thanks for checking us out and thank you for your support!!
