My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Socialization/training: Jeni is an outgoing, energetic, and incredibly sweet girl! She is very smart and curious, so she likes to explore and picks up on things quickly. She has been learning the command “off”, and her counter surfing and jumping on people has reduced significantly in our time together. She also knows the word “no” and is beginning to learn “drop it”. Jeni will occasionally decide to pick up one of my shoes or phone chargers – but a firm “no” immediately stops her. She understands “sit”, as well, but only does it if there is food involved! She is very food and treat motivated, which is helpful with training but will also steal your food or snacks if you aren’t looking. I would consider her potty trained – she will notify me if she needs to go outside with a scratch at the door (we are also working on bell training, but it is still hit or miss); however, if you don’t move quickly once she signals, she will have an accident. I’m sure with a little more consistency, she will really master the housetraining. Jeni LOVES other dogs and playing with them. She will play with my dog for hours, and then cuddle up with him on the chair. She is not good with cats, as she has a high prey drive. I do not have children, but she has enjoyed the kids in my neighborhood. Jeni doesn’t mind her mouth or paws being touched and did excellent at the vet’s office. In the car, Jeni immediately settles and falls asleep. She is used to riding with a car harness, as well. When we visited PetSmart, she did very well in a loud environment that had lots of stimulation.

Crate trained: Jeni is great in a crate! She sleeps in the crate at night in my bedroom and stays in the crate when I need to leave the house without any issue or accidents. I’ve had to run to town and have been gone for several hours without a problem. I have a camera on her while I am gone. She just sleeps the whole time! Jeni also knows the command “crate” and hops right in.

Leash trained: Jeni loves to go on walks, but they are a work in progress! When we first started walking together, Jeni wanted to go everywhere BUT forward. Now, she is walking by my side, and we are just working on minimizing disruption from distractions (like squirrels or leaves or other dogs). We walk about an hour a day. She does best with a gentle leader as she can be headstrong on a leash and will pull, especially when there are other critters around. She has started to settle more quickly when passing other dogs (she gets very excited, pulls, and barks). She has improved greatly in the short couple weeks, and I imagine this progress will continue in her forever home!

Activity Level: She has a moderate - high activity level, but also loves to nap and snuggle with her humans/other dogs in the house. It is an awesome mix. When it is time to play, walk, or do activities – she is all in and ready to go. And when it is time for quiet and chill, she happily cuddles up with her family and enjoys pets and a snooze.

Fence: Jeni needs a yard so that she can play and run! She will jump or climb over shorter barriers, gates, or fences, so a physical fence must be 4’ or taller. An invisible fence may also be considered if the adopter is already experienced with training a dog with a strong prey drive successfully on an invisible fence.

Behavior: Jeni is playful, curious, and very affectionate! She loves to explore, cuddle, and play with her toys. She is a perfect mix between independent and wanting to be close to you. She is confident and intelligent, but she will exercise caution when exposed to something new until she figures it out. A little encouragement and praise go a long way with her. If you’re going somewhere, Jeni absolutely wants to follow and see what you are up to. She is very attached to her humans. She loves to be near them, to give hugs, and to snuggle. She is always willing and eager to do the next fun thing. When she gets excited during play or when it’s time to go outside, she lets out little barks to let you know it. It is really cute. I’ve heard some ‘rooing’ when she comes to tell Oakley she wants to play, too! She loves playing with my dog, Oakley. They spend a couple hours a day romping around together. If she is not playing with Oakley, she will entertain herself. Balls and bones are her favorites! She also loves to chase bugs, and she will entertain herself by watching the moths outside at night through the glass door. When she isn’t playing or exploring, she loves cuddling up next to her human for a nap and some love. And it is so funny when she gets the zoomies.

Medical History: Jeni is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations and on monthly heartworm prevention. She has no medical issues and is a healthy girl! Part of the flap of her right ear is missing, but it does not affect her and is an old injury that is fully healed. She will be due for her next annual leishmaniasis test no later than 8/27/2025.

This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.

Foster Comments: Jeni is a fun-loving, free-spirited love bug from Greece. Her coloring is absolutely stunning, and she has a personality to match. She is so easy to love and is known for her hugs! Every day she brings smiles to my face for so many reasons. Everyone she has met falls in love with her. She has a way of stealing hearts! Jeni is a great dog, and her forever family is going to be so lucky! She has only been with me for a couple weeks, but she has already learned so much and settled in so well. She has been an absolute dream. If you would like to see more pictures or videos of her, feel free to check out my Instagram @setter.rescue.squad  She likely would be best fit for a home with other dogs, no cats, and maybe some older children to run around with and play! Furniture and lap privileges are a must for her – she thrives on being part of the family and loves physical affection.

Foster Location: Danvers, IL

Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $50.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (“Health Certificate”).  Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions.

Application process:
1. Submit on-line application
2. Vet references checked
3. Interview call
4. Home visit (virtual)
An applicant is not guaranteed the dog they apply for.
Applicants must complete the application process before speaking with foster homes.
We do NOT hold dogs for anyone. We have had people who were disappointed that they did not get the dog they initially applied for, but the ones who hung in there with us would not change a thing now that they have their A & B Dog.

Please Note:
1:You must be at least 21 years old to apply to adopt an A&B Setter.
2: Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
3: Proof of heartworm preventative and testing is REQUIRED (via vet records or receipts) for current dogs and recently passed dogs.
4: Signature is implied and assumed on e-mail & online Adoption Applications.

Above & Beyond English Setter Rescue's adoption fee is
$450.00 for puppies and dogs under one year.
$400.00 for dogs one up to three years
$350.00 for dogs three to six years
$250.00 for dogs seven to ten years
Reduced fee on a sliding scale for dogs 11 years and older.

We have made every attempt at keeping our adoption fee the lowest we could despite the rising costs associated with spaying and neutering, immunizations, and other related routine care. In most instances our adoption fee never comes close to the care associated before an adoption of one of our dogs takes place. We do feel however that our adoption fee is still less then if the adopter had to pay these expenses out of their pocket. In most cases volunteer transport is available for your adopted dog up to 1000 miles and within 2 hours of your home.

Mission Statement

Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue's goal is rescuing English Setters in need of new homes. While in our care the dogs will be vetted, spayed or neutered, and evaluated in foster homes, where they can learn love and stability and we can determine which type of home would work best for each dog.

Once adopted, Above and Beyond volunteers will be available for the dogs and adopters for each dog's life, with advice and support. Our mission is to put the dog's welfare above all else.

We are a non-profit, charitable 501(c)(3) organization. 100% of your donation goes to help English Setters in need and is tax deductible.

For more information on our mission, or for assistance, please contact us.
