My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

We're searching for a special adopter to give young adult Silverstein a loving home. Silverstein is FeLV+ and FIV+.

This beautiful boy was a stray cat who desperately wanted to be loved and didn't know how. Slowly, a good Samaritan showed him that humans can be kind, and he grew to be a very affectionate cat. Once he was taken in and saw a vet, he was faced with few options - fortunately Broken Tail Rescue was able to step in and offer this guy a positive future. In his foster home he has learned to trust and loves being brushed and pet.

While he gets along with other cats, he should only be around cats who have also tested positive for FeLV, as it is a serious disease. FIV is also transmissible, but significantly less so.

Just like with any cat, we can't make him live forever, but we can help fill however many days he has with love and happiness.

While we encourage potential adopters to do their own additional research, we've included some information about FeLV below. While Silverstein is also positive for FIV, it tends to be a much slower progressing disease compared to FeLV.

A bit about FeLV:
Only cats can contract the feline leukemia virus, as it is a species specific disease. There is a strong link between FeLV and feline lymphoma or leukemia. However, not every cat that is positive for feline leukemia virus develops cancer, and not every cat who has these cancers has the feline leukemia infection.

Transmission occurs through the saliva, such as a bite or sharing food or water. Oftentimes, kittens will test positive for FeLV because their mother passed it down to them during gestation or through nursing. If the mother passes the virus to her kitten, the kitten may thrive for a while then succumb to the infection in a few years, and only time will tell.

This disease affects cats in a variety of different ways. Because of the presence of infection, it is the leading cause of leukemia in cats and can develop into blood disorders and a decrease in immunity. Cats with FeLV are prone to other diseases and poor health because of decreased ability to fight off infection brought on by viruses, bacteria, fungi, and so on.

Supportive care and an examination by your veterinarian to assess your cat’s current health status every 6 months is vital to maintaining their well-being and longevity.

Feline leukemia isn’t necessarily a death sentence. Cats may cope with secondary infections successfully and live relatively regular lives - there's been a recorded case of a cat living to 15 with few health complications during their lifespan. However, we want to be upfront and honest, and a majority of cats with FeLV have a significantly shorter life span.

Silverstein has gotten the short end of the stick in life so far - are you the one to make his dreams of a home come true?

Additional adoption info

The Adoption Process
- Fill out an application for your potential new family member
- One of our volunteers will review the submitted application and do their best to respond within 48 hours
- We will check personal and veterinary records (if applicable)
- After checking references, we will then look to schedule a home visit (for dogs only)
- If the animal is a good match, then a meet and greet will be setup – usually at the foster home or the Cambridge or Millbury PetSmart adoption centers
- We like to have all family members attend
- Finally, the last step if to complete the adoption paperwork and to bring your new family member home

Here are a few items for people to consider before deciding to adopt:

- Renters must have their landlord’s permission
- Adopters must be 21 years of age or older
- All adoptive homes must be stable, supportive, and capable to meet all veterinary and financial needs of the animal
- Some adoptions will require adopters to enroll the dog in training classes as a condition of adoption, however we encourage training for ALL adopted dogs.
- Kittens younger than 6 months must be adopted with another kitten/cat or go to a home with a resident cat for socialization
- There may be additional adoption requirements for puppies (puppy socialization classes, someone home during the day, etc)
