My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

***Currently located in Portland, OR***

Hi! I am Sanoa and together with my sis Saffi, we were born at a campsite in Salidita; two girls in a litter of 11. Being such a large stray family, resources were scarce, and two of our siblings died shortly after birth Some nice humans started coming by the campsite to care for the rest of us and our mother. They brought us food and water and sheltered us as best they could. We heard discussions of a “program” and “shelter” they wanted to bring us to, but it was full of other dogs in need at the time. The nice humans still advocated for us fiercely in the community, and 7 of our siblings found loving homes locally. We never received any interest

Two months passed with the volunteers diligently caring for us at the campsite. They were the only constant we knew in life One day when they came, we could tell something was different. There was excitement in their voices as they promised us it was finally our turn to find homes! They scooped us up, loaded us into a car, and drove us away forever. We lived at the Surfers for Strays shelter for a month or so, where the other adoptable pups told us magical stories of all the dogs who have been in the program and gone on to find homes. Pinch us - it sounds too good to be true! We recently took a big leap towards this dream when we flew to foster families in the U.S! Who knew us small town gals would make it so far!

Our early exposure to humans has made me quite friendly, confident, and outgoing. I am a good listener and have made great strides in my leash manners. I am excited to learn more with our future families (don’t forget the yummy treats for encouragement!). I am great with other dogs and love to play!

I can’t wait to find my furever humans to go through life with. I promise to be by your side through it all!

Love,
Your Sanoa

More about this rescue

Surfers for Strays was started in January of 2017 by Isabel Velasco and Natalie Ritenour when they rescued 7 puppies and their mother, who had been abandoned at a local hot springs in Lagunillas, Guerrero, Mexico. The puppies were being eaten alive by parasites and their mother was severely malnourished.

Working together the women devised a plan to house and care for the animals and raise funds and more importantly, raise awareness to sterilize pets. They gained enough support in the local community to start helping “callajeros”, street animals in the villages of Troncones, Los Llanos, La Saladita and surrounding regions.

With the help of local veterinarians and citizens, they organized spay and neuter clinics and a program to educate children on how to treat and care for animals. Surfers and other travelers began volunteering and growing the network to foster and adopt animals in the US and Canada. With that momentum and the love and support of key volunteers, Surfers for Strays Inc. was founded in August of 2019 to cover more ground and help more animals escape the cycle of neglect, abuse and abandonment. From 2020-2021, Surfers for Strays adopted out more than 250 dogs and cats to fur-ever homes in North America and paid for more than 3,150 dogs and cats to be spayed and neutered in local communities in Mexico.

Your donations support our programs to sterilize, rehabilitate, find fosters and adopters for animals in need. Your donations also support education programs for the humane treatment of animals in underserved communities. Together we are saving animals and sharing the Mucho Aloha spirit.
