My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Our special survivor Poppy has beat the odd and is looking for her perfect calmer adult forever home!

This 5 year old Shih tzu/terrier mix is lucky to be alive, let alone walking! She was hit by a car and her pelvis broken in 3 places as well as ligaments in one of her knees torn. Vets initially weren't sure she would be able to use the bathroom unassisted or be able to walk but after surgery, time, and crate rest she's doing so much better than expected! She's still a bit wobbly and muscle wasted and will need some physical therapy once her pelvis is more healed and she's cleared by the vet, and she will never be an agility champion but is housebroken and continent and enjoying her short walks for now.

Poppy is a nervous girl despite her cuddly muppet appearance, and tends to bond to her people preferably women and become protective and suspicious of visitors. So she's looking for a calmer adult home where she just has to unconditionally love her beloved person/people and isn't expected to be the life of the party or welcoming committee to everyone who meets her. She's fine with other small gentle calm dogs- no one that will want to wrestle and jump on her as she continues to heal, but she is happy to nap on her soft fluffy beds with other little dogs in our vet room where she's been hanging out. She loves stuffed squeaky toys and hanging out at your feet while you are working or watching tv. Poppy is 20lbs with the face of a Shih tzu but a taller frame and longer legs, and the sweetest most soulful eyes that gaze up at you lovingly once she trusts you.

More about this shelter

Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc. is founded on the belief that all animals have a natural right to humane treatment including proper care and safe shelter. Due to overpopulation, there are insufficient homes for most cats and dogs. Some are lucky enough to find temporary shelter and a few even find permanent homes. However it is a devastating fact that the majority are either euthanized or forced to chance life without shelter.

To support our belief and to relieve the unnecessary suffering of animals, we shall:
1.Extend every effort to find, evaluate, and secure good adoptive homes for animals in our care.
2.Provide animals with medical services and behavior therapy to the extent of our ability.
3.Adhere to a “no-kill” policy: animals shall not be euthanized for the purpose of providing space for new animals.
4.Adhere to a 100% spay and neuter policy.
5.Maintain continuing humane education programs and in particular to schools.
