Meet Stella! This 10-month-old lady originally came to us as a stray, so we have been learning more about her along the way. Stella is an adorable, energetic, and playful pup looking for the perfect person to help her feel at home.
At the shelter, Stella has also demonstrated wariness and fearful behavior when first meeting new staff members and potential adopters. Stella will likely need to be carefully managed and monitored when she first goes home. It’s important to note that many signs of Stella’s fear and uncertainty are subtle and fall under the umbrella of behaviors we refer to as “appeasement” behaviors. Appeasement in dog body language often looks a lot like submissiveness and can include behaviors such as a dog rolling onto their side or back to display their belly, ears pinned back, repeated licking of the air and/or another dog or person, a lowered or crouched body posture, a tucked and low wagging tail, amongst other behaviors. These behaviors can be easy to overlook or confuse with friendly, attention seeking behaviors, so close attention should be paid to subtle shifts in body language whenever Stella is introduced to a new individual.
If you have any additional questions or would like to have a more in-depth conversation about how to best meet Stella’s particular needs, please give us a call at 406-549-3934 or come into the shelter anytime during our open hours, Wed-Sun from 1pm-6pm.

More about this shelter
At the shelter you will have an opportunity to meet and visit with your potential new companion. Spend as much time as you need getting to know an animal. Adoption counselors will work with you to help find that perfect pet, but bear in mind that this may often require more than one visit. We are continually receiving new animals and evaluating their placements. If you do not find that perfect companion the first time you visit, you are sure to find him or her in subsequent visits.
An adoption counselor will answer all your questions and review important information with you. They can help you decide what size, age, breed and temperament will most successfully meet your expectations. They will review information about your pet's adjustment to his or her new home, housetraining, health concerns, vaccinations, nutrition, training, grooming, etc.
Because adopting an animal is a family decision, we ask that when possible you bring your entire family, including any resident dogs, to meet your potential companion.
The entire adoption process can be time consuming. But spending time getting to know your future companion and asking any questions before taking your new companion home will help to ensure a perfect match for the years ahead. We ask for your patience and cooperation in the process of bringing pets and people together!
