My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Their adoption fee is $180 for the pair.

Did you know that ferrets are often referred to as wiggly kitten noodles!? Well... not really, but we should be!

We are not cage animals; our cage should be thought of like a bedroom- we sleep there but have lots of room outside of it to play and explore. We are very social and need to interact with people every day! We love to sleep in hammocks or under fuzzy blankets with our friends!

Do you know what it means to be crepuscular? It means to be most active at dawn and dusk- that's us! Another fun thing about us ferrets is that we LOVE shiny objects- gone are the days of leaving your keys lying around! We have lots of energy and love to play with toys. Our inquisitive nature makes puzzle toys like kongs loads of fun!

Our average lifespan is 5 to 7 years, so make sure that you are ready to take on a high-energy, interactive, long-term pet.

Housing requirements: Most housing sold at pet stores is too small for small pets. They are going to be spending most of their lives inside their cage; your housing must be as large as the below or larger (bigger is always better!) in order to adopt this pet.
A cage that's at least 3 feet wide, 2 feet deep, and 4 feet tall (with multiple levels). Double level Ferret Nation cages are perfect. A good ferret cage will cost $200-300.
Ferrets prefer multi-level cages that feature stairs or ramps that they can climb and shelves or hammocks where they can sleep.
Cages should have solid floors, wire flooring is uncomfortable to ferrets' feet.
Ferrets are not cage animals. They need to be able to run around, explore, play, and interact with you every day.
Owners must ferret-proof each room in which the ferrets are allowed, to keep their pets from escaping and to remove any hazards that could injure the ferret.
Most owners find that caging ferrets when they are away or sleeping helps to keep their animals safe and out of trouble. A cage provides a safe and secure "bedroom for the ferret.

Ferrets are a social species, meaning they need the company of their own kind.
If there are two names listed together (eg Peanut Butter w/Jelly), that means that the two animals are a bonded pair of friends, and must be adopted together.
If there are more than two animals listed together (eg Peanut Butter w/Jelly and Toast), the group is to be adopted together. If there are 4 or more, they can be adopted in pairs or trios - we just can't leave a single alone.
Got a single at home you're looking for a friend for? Any animal listed alone on our website is a single and a great candidate; if there is a group of 3 or more, usually one can be taken out of that group as a companion for your single.
A new friend will need a separate cage until friendship has been established
Ferrets are always spayed/neutered, so mixing boys and girls is fine.

If you're ready to adopt now and want to learn more about, meet, or adopt this pet, you can start the process in one of two ways:

Come on in during open adoption hours Tuesday - Saturday 12:30-3:00! For in-shelter pets (not in foster care) coming in ASAP is the fastest way to adopt.

**the below two methods are slower than visiting us**
Call us (413-781-4000 x 1) or email us (springfield@dakinhumane.org) for more information about a pet. We are often on the line with another client, but we return voice mail and emails within 24 hours.
