My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Benny, a charismatic adult Pitbull mix whose playful spirit will fill your home with joy. This sweet and friendly canine has a heart full of love and a personality that's hard to resist. His goofy antics are sure to make you smile and his boundless energy is infectious. He likes to play, and his zest for life is evident in every wag of his tail. Despite his energy, Benny also enjoys quiet moments of companionship, proving he's a well-rounded friend. Adopt Benny and experience the pure joy of sharing your life with a furry friend who will love you unconditionally.

Benny is a 1 - 2 yr old male Pitbull mix. He has a high energy level, so he would benefit from an active family with a fenced yard and plenty of space for daily exercise and play. He walks well on a leash with no pulling. Benny is food motivated and knows the command sit. He mixes well with other dogs in a kennel and is indifferent towards cats in the shelter environment.

Dogs are generally tested with dogs of their own size; and dog meets with the resident dogs are always encouraged. Our cat test should be used as a general-purpose screening only to rule out overt aggression; we always recommend caution when introducing dogs to cats in the home. Recommendation on suitability of placement with children by their ages is based on behavioral observations including energy level and response to body handling. We never recommend leaving young children unsupervised with dogs, and we cannot guarantee the behavior of dogs with children, other pets, or cats.

Behavior evaluations should be considered as a snapshot of the behavior of the dog at this point in time; JHS believes all dog families need to be prepared to invest time and energy into training as well as provide common sense management of their new dog. We always encourage family to do some research on the breeds or mixes of breeds prior to adoption as many can have some unique characteristics that may or may not fit into their families. Always remember that the majority of dogs at our shelter have been exposed to or may have kennel cough. Kennel cough is contagious to other dogs, please talk to your vet if you have any questions about kennel cough prior to adoption. Please ask your adoption counselor at time of adoption if you have any unanswered questions regarding illnesses and treatments of the pet that you are adopting. For more information about this dog or any others at our Shelter, please visit www.joplinhumane.org. We are the Joplin Humane Society in Joplin, Missouri. 417-623-3642. Benny was in a foster home for a few weeks. This is from his foster dad: I am outgoing, playful, affectionate and overly stimulated. I know the sit and down command. I like men, women, children, dogs, rope toys, squeaky toys, stuffed animals soft and hard treats. I do not like cats or baths. My favorite activities are belly rubs and quite cuddles. Benny is a big lover who loves to be given and providing cuddles and affection and is very very food motivated. He is a big fan of just chilling! (Cuddling on the couch, playing with toys, just being around you) however he doesn’t do well with cats of all varieties(I have three cats that are each very different personalities from social to not super social with dogs and people, and none of them are big fans)not that he is aggressive or tries to eat them he just is a bit too hyper with them and tends to nip/bark at them around food or water bowls even when they are just eating their own food. He also gets very jealous of my other dog if they are eating at different times / getting affection and he is not which led to a bit of skirmishes nothing crazy but I think he just isn’t used to a stable environment with other animals that also need love and attention due to where he was prior. I think he would do well with dogs his size and up but not smaller and an owner who is home quite often and has a lot of structure with all of their animals and probably no cats at least until he is more accustomed to normal calm dog life. He isn’t super hyper or anything and he did not chew any of my belongings up or anything either only when he was stressed did he sort of rip a toy open but otherwise he was pretty good about leaving household items alone. Oh and lastly he likes to eat cat poop out of the litter box for some very strange reason so I think next unattended that could be bad health wise for him. As long as there is structure and a lot of quality time spent with him to train him and get him used to dog life I think he would do well anywhere because he just so sweet and he loves care rides. Additional adoption info

We believe in an open, non-judgmental adoption process. We recognize that no one is perfect and try to match a person's pet expectations so fewer pets are returned. Under normal conditions the process is:

- Come in with your family and look around. If you see a pet that you like, ask staff to meet the pet (if the pet is available to be taken out)
- Complete the adoption questionnaire.
- After the meeting, go over what information we have on file about the pet and his/her past experience.
- Finish the process by having a conversation with our adoption staff.
- After the above is completed, we can put a hold on a pet for 24 hours if you need time to think about the decision or to prepare your home.
- Most of our pets can go home the same day.

Adoption fees are: $90 - $140
This includes the animals spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations including rabies, de-worming and micro-chip.

Rules:
- We will not adopt a pet to anyone under the age of 18
- We will not adopt to anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- We reserve the right not to place a pet in a home based on the information we have or if we feel the pet is not a match for the person's lifestyle.

JHS does reduce or waive adoption fees for a variety of reasons: Too many cats or kittens in the building, older and special needs pets that have a harder time finding homes, etc. Adoption Promotions are a fun way to engage the public and bring in potential adopters. Shelters remain the #4 way people obtain their pets.
