10/3/24 Foster Update: Dash has been spending his time in a wonderful foster home as he completes his heartworm treatment, and he is doing so well! We have learned just how sweet a dog he is. Dash loves everyone he meets and smiles often. He gets along fine with the other dog in the home and settled right in with her. Dash takes a daily anti-inflammatory med for some weakness in his hips which is just due to age, and it has helped him. While a home without lots of stairs is best, we should also mention that he is a mobile boy who loves being outside in the yard exploring, or being anywhere close to you. Of course, he also enjoys a nice soft dog bed! If you appreciate the easy sweetness of seniors, please ask about Dash.
Dash's Story: Looking at Dash's expressive face with his soft brown eyes, it is difficult to understand how his owners could abandon this sweetest of seniors in an apartment after adopting him as a pup of six weeks. Now with Sunshine, we are learning what a good-natured, forgiving and happy dog he is.
Dash is a handsome 12-year old Golden/Lab mix weighing 55-60 lbs, with a soft, thick blonde coat. Do not let his age fool you, this sweet guy acts younger and is quite the gentleman. He loves all the attention he can soak up.
Dash was adopted as a six-week old pup from the Mobile County shelter. Fast forward to now, and the local Animal Cruelty Officer was called to an apartment where Dash had been abandoned by those same owners after they tried to have him euthanized, but a vet luckily refused. They dropped food in the apartment now and then but left him living in filth. To avoid arrest, they turned Dash over to Sunshine where his new and best life is ahead of him.
The first order of business for Dash was a tub of water and a thorough cleaning. He LOVED that water and being shampooed and dried, with all the attention that came with it! Imagine how good that water felt, and we suspect Dash would love swimming. Dash is a kind, sweet soul of a dog who is good on a leash, enjoys his toys, and deserves to be someone's close companion.
Dash has a moderate energy level and good mobility. He will bring joy to your life for sure, and we expect him to be ready to travel to his home in mid October.
Dash is vaccinated, neutered, and micro-chipped. He is currently undergoing treatment for heartworms. Dash has also received a Proheart 12 injection which means he will not need heartworm preventatives for a year.
Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to become an important, forever part of their life journey by continuing the rehabilitation we have begun.

About Our Rescue
Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.
The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.
Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
