My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Esme is living in a foster home. Please submit an application from our website and/or email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to learn if you are a match!

Sweet little Esme and three of her siblings were abandoned in a box on a patch of grass in front of Chicago Animal Care and Control. We happened to be down there meeting dogs that day and saw them being carried in, and taken out. We must say all 4 puppies looked well cared for and were so happy and joyful! Thanks to foster homes, we were able to save two of the puppies and PAWS took the other two.

Esme has been in foster with one of our awesome staff members. For a puppy, she is doing great with housebreaking. She has never had a poop accident inside, and when she does have to pee she knows to go on pee pads. She is a puppy, so is still wanting to be close to her people at all times and does cry when left alone in her crate. She is also a puppy who is going to put things she should not in her mouth! So she will need an adopter who is willing to work on training with her. Esme loves other dogs, as you can see in her video!

Esme's foster mom also writes, "She likes bubbles, we just discovered she likes bubbles, she sniffs around to find and try to catch them if they are still in the air!
She is still in her shark period, likes to play around feet and nibble clothes, so be careful when you are walking.
Loves to cuddle!!, watching a movie on the carpet and she would like to be on top of you to take a nap.
She has a pretty good routine, she wakes up between 6:30 to 7 am and goes for a potty break,
7 to 7:30 breakfast time, we are waiting at least an hour in a possible two hours and she is ready to go again for pooping and pee.
Between 10 to 5 pm, she is in the office with a family member, intermittently going for potty break almost every two hours, and receiving a little lunch and hard chew.
Between 5 to 6:30 pm she is having her dinner, playful time with her toys and then a quick nap.
Around 9 to 10 pm she is going for the last potty break, we spend at least 20 or 30 minutes in these breaks since she needs to play and then remember she needs to poop.
In the room, if she is sleeping by herself, she would wake up between 1:20 to 2:30 am and pee, for the last couple days, she has been doing great and using her pee-pads. But if she is sleeping with a person, she is not taking that break and just sleeps during the whole night, but for sure at 6 am she needs to go outside.

If it was up to her, she could spend the whole day outside in the yard, but she likes to chew on things she finds in the yard, so for sure needs more training to help with "drop it" !
At the time of eating, she knows she needs to sit and wait, we are still working in the "wait", but at least, she sits before we put her plate down."

Esme's adoption fee is $400. This animal is spayed, and is up to date on core vaccines. They will need a Heartworm test between 6-7 months of age.
