Looking for the perfect companion horse who will get along with literally anybody and will try her best to keep them out of trouble? Jazzy’s your girl!
When we first met Jazzy, we were under the impression that we were getting an 18 year old, totally healthy and ridable Standardbred who had been used in lessons until recently. Then we got her to the farm and realized something wasn’t quite matching up with what we had been told.
To start off, her teeth tell us that she’s in her mid to late twenties, rather than 18 like we were told. She also seems much more of a thoroughbred than a standardbred, including a lip tattoo rather than one on her neck.
In addition to being wrong about her age, it turns out, Jasmine has a couple ongoing medical things that will have to be managed for the rest of her life. Like many of the old-timers, she has some arthritis (mostly in her neck and hind legs) so she can’t be ridden very often, but she does love going out for the occasional trail ride, she’s also great for being ponied along, so she’d be great emotional support for a horse who needs some company out and about. She gets Equioxx daily to help manage her arthritis and does fantastically on it. She also came to us with a really severe case of Lyme Disease which unfortunately turned out to be chronic, so she will occasionally have a flare up of that but it’s only happened once while she’s been here with us. She also has some decent skin allergies and is on some allergy meds year-long (which typically cost about $50 a month) and does best covered head to toe in fly gear (which she’s very kind to) or goes onto night turn-out during the height of bug season. The good news is that Jazzy is literal perfection and eats all of her meds in her grain without any issue whatsoever.
She’s also literal perfection because she’s the sweetest, sassiest old lady who was obviously loved and taken care of somewhere in her history. She loves attention, especially a good whither scritch, but will wait patiently for you to notice her. She’s never pushy and can be trusted with even our greenest volunteers. She also loves doing liberty and that kind of groundwork - she’s who we use to teach it to our new staff members because we can trust that even if the human messes up or sends the wrong cues, Jazzy won’t do anything stupid.
If you are looking for a baby-sitter who you can trust to behave herself and not be a moron and don’t mind having to add a few meds into her grain, then Jazzy could be the girl for you and you should fill out an adoption application for her on our website, waywardranch.org, or reach out if you have any questions! We don’t have any set adoption fees, but do ask that a donation be made at the time of adoption, and for Jasmine we are asking for a donation of $500.

More about this rescue
Our Mission: To provide a quality life to the animals that need it most.
Wayward Ranch Animal Sanctuary, Inc. is a 501c3, tax exempt non-profit organization and all donations to our sanctuary are tax deductible.
The Dream:
Wayward Ranch was founded by three friends who, after working for other rescues for a long time, realized there was something missing from the average rescue model. No animal is perfect, and in the typical shelter system any behavioral concerns an animal had coming in are just exacerbated the longer they are kenneled or caged waiting for a home.
Many local shelters have taken to shipping puppies up from the south because they are more “adoptable” than the shelter animals we have here. However, this just floods are market and takes homes and resources from our local animals who are suffering as a result.
We are committed to a different type of rescue experience. We are a unique combination of adoption and sanctuary facility, taking the pressure of euthanasia away from animals who may not be generically adoptable. We also help our animals thrive, rather than deteriorate, as they wait for forever homes using a combination of enrichment and training techniques.
