My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

***WAYWARD RANCH IS CLOSING AND WE NEED TO REHOME ALL OF THE ANIMALS IN OUR CARE BY JULY 2025!!***

This is Molly and she has what we lovingly call ‘backwards ears’ (mostly because explaining what R.B.F. is to children who don’t understand what it means is awkward on tours). While she may look grouchy with her pinned ears, the moment you touch her or interact with her she melts into the sweetheart she actually is!

She is a 10 year old off the track standardbred mare who is about 15.2hh. She came to us when it became clear she wasn't very good at racing and her family wanted her to have the chance at a happier life!

She’s a super easy keeper, living on just a ration balancer (Enrich) and a couple supplements (Outlast as a preventative for ulcers and SA powder for some mild seasonal allergies) and eats literally any hay that’s placed in front of her. She’s currently barefoot and is doing well, but may potentially have to go into some shoes if she’s in a more intense training program. Out in the field, she gets along with both mares and geldings and while she’s higher up in the typical pecking order, she doesn’t get super attached to her friends and can be taken from the field to be on her own with just the occasional call to her friends.

Under saddle she’s solid at a walk/trot out on the trail, but is still figuring out how her legs should go when she’s cantering with someone on her back. She also probably doesn’t have a future as a high jumper - she’s pretty clumsy going over poles and small cross rails, but she never balks or stops infront of them, she just doesn’t necessarily pick up her feet as high as she should over them. She's currently pretty ring sour, which is something we're working on.

She absolutely LOVES going out for a trail ride and is always at her happiest when she’s out in the woods, regardless of if it’s on an established trail with a buddy or blazing a new one all on her own. In the woods nothing bothers her. A deer leaping from the tall grass in front of her? Got one step to the side and she turned her head to look at it. Bird taking off literally right underneath her? Barely got an ear twitch in response. She’s just happy to be out in nature and won’t let anything bother her out there.

This is just a quick summary of this amazing little horse, but if you are interested in learning more, you can check out her bio page on our website, waywardranch.org, and if it seems like she would be a good fit, you can fill out an adoption application from there too! Or if you have any questions, you can reach out and we’ll get back to you asap! We don’t have any set adoption fees, but do ask that a donation be made at the time of adoption, and for Molly we are asking for a donation of $2000.

More about this rescue

Our Mission: To provide a quality life to the animals that need it most.

Wayward Ranch Animal Sanctuary, Inc. is a 501c3, tax exempt non-profit organization and all donations to our sanctuary are tax deductible.

The Dream:

Wayward Ranch was founded by three friends who, after working for other rescues for a long time, realized there was something missing from the average rescue model. No animal is perfect, and in the typical shelter system any behavioral concerns an animal had coming in are just exacerbated the longer they are kenneled or caged waiting for a home.

Many local shelters have taken to shipping puppies up from the south because they are more “adoptable” than the shelter animals we have here. However, this just floods are market and takes homes and resources from our local animals who are suffering as a result.

We are committed to a different type of rescue experience. We are a unique combination of adoption and sanctuary facility, taking the pressure of euthanasia away from animals who may not be generically adoptable. We also help our animals thrive, rather than deteriorate, as they wait for forever homes using a combination of enrichment and training techniques.
