My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Easy, chill and loving!

Hi, friends! My name is Atreyu, and I’m a 1-year-old, 31-pound, neutered Bulldog Mix.  I’ve come all the way from a shelter in Riverside, where my owner tried to relinquish me.  The shelter was at capacity at the time, but thankfully, TAP was there to scoop me up and give me a second chance at life!

I’m told that I’m a super sweet boy who loves people.  My tail is always wagging, and I’m happy to see every person I meet.  I love cuddling in bed and playing tug-o-war.  I tend to wear myself out quickly during playtime, and when that happens, I like to retreat to my gated area and get a few hours of sleep.  In general, I’m a low-maintenance guy who craves routine and structure, and I do best in a calm and non-chaotic environment.

As far as training goes, I am making great progress with my potty training, and I’ve almost mastered leash training, as I do well on short walks and don’t pull.  I’m food motivated and easily trainable, so I’m confident I’ll be an expert in these two areas in no time! I also do well inside a gated area, but please don’t put me in a crate because those scare me.

I don’t show any signs of separation anxiety when left behind, but I do tend to get overwhelmed easily in certain environments. To help me manage my anxiety and fixation on objects as I continue my training, I’ve been taking Prozac (~$5 for a month’s supply. Price depends on where purchased and market value).  Thankfully, I can be easily redirected when encountering a distraction, but I need structure and consistency in my environment to help support me with this.

I think I’d do best in a mellow home with someone who understands the Bulldog breed and all of its quirks. I don’t need a lot of exercise, so a small house and yard would be just fine. I prefer to be left home in my gated area rather than be out and about with you.  However, as I gain more confidence and have more exposure to new situations, I’m sure I won’t be as overwhelmed as easily in public.

I’d probably be best as the only doggie since I don’t like to share my toys. However, it’s possible that with a slow introduction and the right pup, I might be okay with a doggie sibling.  Absolutely no kitties, though, since I have a strong prey drive.  As far as kiddos go, I think I’d be fine around older kids (12 years and up) since I’m a vigorous player and sometimes can’t tell the difference between little fingers and toys. Even though I’m small, I’m strong and mighty and could be too much for little humans.

Do we sound like a good match? My adoption fee is $350 and that includes spaying/neutering, shots, and microchip.  If you want to take me home, please fill out the form on the website here: https://theanimalpad.org/adoption-application/.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We prioritize local San Diego applicants. We do not provide transport of dogs to other states, and don't allow the dogs to fly in the cargo of the plane.
Our adoption process from start to finish, involves 3 standard forms, and 2 situational.
All potential applicants must be capable of providing their adopted pet with routine and emergency veterinary care (yearly health checks, keeping vaccinations current, heartworm/flea preventatives, and immediate care in the event the animal is sick or injured). They are required to license their pet, and keep an identification tag on their pet at all times.
All applicants must agree to a home check, and provide us with a veterinary reference, or personal references if you're a first-time pet owner. Our home checks are not to invade the privacy of the applicants, we do this to ensure the pet is going into a safe home. We do not discriminate against non-homeowners, or those living in apartments, condos, or otherwise.
Our adoption fees vary from $150-1000.
Applicants must agree in writing that if for any reason they are unable to keep or care for their pet, the pet will be surrendered back to our rescue and not re-homed, turned over to a shelter, pound, rescue, new owner, sold, etc.

More about this rescue

Overview
The Animal Pad is a nonprofit, all-breed dog rescue devoted to saving the lives of dogs facing euthanasia at high kill animal shelters and off the streets of Mexico. We rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home locally.

We are dedicated to animal advocacy, and educating dog owners on the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. We are a foster based rescue, and rely heavily on the kindness and generosity of the amazing people who make donations toward the rescue and care of the dogs we save.

We are always looking for adopters, fosters, donations, volunteers, etc.. Please let us know if you would like to get involved by contacting us at one of the email addresses found below.
