Meet Meda, who comes to us all the way from Serbia!
Meda, which means "Bear" in Serbian, was rescued by one of our adopters, Irena, who went home to visit family and saw this adorable scruffy puppy running in the streets. She couldn’t just walk away and leave him behind, so she brought him back to her mom’s house for safety. Irena shared that there are so many stray dogs in Serbia and large dogs often end up chained outside. She invested time and money in getting Meda vetted and cleared through Customs to come to the US, and Irena's mom took care of him while he did a quarantine hold. It was a team effort, and Meda has made her way to safety in Arlington, VA, and is now officially a Worthy Dog!
Our local vet also saw Meda last week and he was a big hit with the staff and a perfect patient. The vet thinks he’s a Shepard mix, possibly with some Terrier. He just lost his last baby tooth, so he’s estimated to be 6 to 7 months old. He currently weighs 45 lbs, and we expect him to be 60-70 pounds at full size. The great news is that he’s a healthy young pup with excellent social skills and a very sweet nature. He’s living in a foster home with a mom, dad, dog, cats, and kids, and he does great with all of them.
FOSTER MOM UPDATE - We asked Irena for an update on Meda:
“Meda had an easy integration into my home. He is respectful with my dog and does well meeting all the neighborhood dogs on and off-leash. He's friendly with my cats and great with my kids. He potty trained himself, not a single accident in my home. He is also crate trained and I use the crate daily to give him some downtime. He’s not a huge fan at first and will whine when I put him in, but he does settle down.
Media is a social, playful puppy who is just happy about life. His favorite thing to do is to snuggle up to a human and play. He is very people-oriented and wants to be involved and participate in everything. He is smart, trainable, and wants to please his people. He’s the kind of dog you can take with you everywhere and he greets people and other dogs with ease.
My dog, Peggy, is not a fan of play and will sometimes low growl when he engages her, and Meda will just move away or lay down in submission. He’s been getting daily playdates with my neighbor’s dog, and they have a blast together. They go on walks together too. Meda is pretty good on the leash - he pulls a little bit when he sees a squirrel but has regular puppy energy and responds to 'no' and being pulled back.”

This adorable scruffy boy is perfect for family life — kid, dog, and cat tested. He’s getting excellent socialization in his foster home and is a pup who is ready to go and do. He needs a fun, active family and would love a young pup buddy in his new home.

Thank you for considering adoption and choosing to save a dog’s life!
Adding a dog to your family is a rewarding and life-changing experience. Dogs enrich our lives and have the amazing ability to give and receive love unconditionally. They can be your loyal companion and friend, and a watchful playmate for your kids, but they are also a serious, long-term commitment. They will depend on you for their health and well-being, and require an investment of love, time, and money for the rest of their life.
As you search for your new dog, please remember that there is no shortage of dogs who need saving. There are far more dogs waiting to be adopted than people who are willing to adopt them, so if the dog in the picture who you’ve imagined bringing home isn’t available, there are thousands more amazing, loving dogs just hoping for the chance to be your dog. We ask that you keep an open mind, stay flexible, and we will do our best to work with you to find a great match for your family.
We strongly encourage anyone thinking about adopting a dog to do your research and make sure you are prepared for the commitment. If you have thought about what’s required and are ready to adopt, here’s what you can expect when you apply to adopt a dog from Worthy Dog Rescue.
Worthy Dog Rescue cannot guarantee that the dog you apply for will be available once you have been approved. We do our best to work with adopters and meet your needs, but we do not adopt dogs on a first-come, first-serve basis. All applications are screened to determine the most suitable match for the dog and the adopter. We want to place dogs in good homes as quickly as possible, so the dog can start their new life with their family, and we can free up their foster home to save another dog in need.
We understand how easy it is to become attached to a dog you’ve found online, but sometimes the dog you apply for may already be scheduled to meet another adopter, or it may not be the best fit for your home for a variety of behavioral reasons. Our dogs are fostered by one of our volunteers, living in their home as part of their family. This allows us to get to know the dog, what they need, their level of socialization, and the type of home that will best suit them.
Our goal is to place dogs in loving, responsible, and committed permanent homes. We take great care in finding good matches for our dogs and adopters too. We look forward to working with you to find the dog that will be with you and your family for many years to come.
