My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ellie’s rescue journey began at an emergency hospital where good Samaritans took her after finding her as a stray. She had a major wound to the side of her face, and X-rays would come to reveal the unthinkable: Ellie had been shot in the head. The bullet entered near her eye and traveled downward, lodging in her sinus cavity. Ellie was stable, but her injury was serious and would require surgical intervention with a specialist. As an injured stray, Ellie became a ward of Long Beach Animal Care Services. Wanting to give her every chance possible, Ellie’s guardians at LBACS wanted to send her to a specialist but would need a rescue partner to be there for her recovery. Thanks to a foster stepping forward during her time of crisis, we were able to offer our help as a rescue. Ellie was able to get the enucleation and rhinoplasty she’d need for the surgeons to retrieve the bullet. After strict crate rest for several weeks following the surgery, Ellie has made a full recovery! Now that she’s had time to decompress and heal, she’s shown us her true personality. Here’s what we’ve learned about her:

Ellie is a high-energy, playful, 50-pound one-year-old who lives for toys, playing in the water, and belly rubs. Throw in some time for a trot around the neighborhood and some hang time with her cat and dog friends in the house, and she will tell you that was her perfect day. (Yes, cats! Ellie might even enjoy the company of cats more than she does dogs. Her foster has witnessed her grooming one of her kittie friends on more than one occasion.) Thanks to the work her foster and one of our trusted trainers has put in with her, Ellie’s confidence in and out of the home has been increasing every week. She has learned her basic obedience skills, is house-trained, and crate-trained. As we continue to introduce her to new environments and stimuli, her perfect adopter will be someone who is patient and understands that some wounds need more time to heal than others. Dogs are resilient, and Ellie is no different; it doesn’t take her long to warm-up to people who give her some time and space. Ultimately, she’s a curious and affectionate pup who is looking for the security that comes with routine and the knowledge that she can count on her caretakers.

More about this rescue

K9 Kismet Dog Rescue is a foster-based, volunteer-run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Long Beach, CA. Founded in 2015, our dedicated team has helped to place hundreds of animals in loving, permanent homes.

Our primary mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and find loving, permanent homes for homeless dogs, specifically dogs in shelters at-risk of euthanasia and dogs whose owners can no longer care for them. We believe in compassionate rescue when the dog is enduring inhumane living conditions or likely to be deemed less adoptable due to age, health, emotional state, or breed. We ensure that all the dogs we take into our rescue, regardless of individual needs, are cared for with love and compassion for the duration of their lives.

We strive to make a difference in the life of each dog we bring into our pack, and our commitment to each dog doesn’t end once they are adopted. We provide lifelong support to all K9 Kismet alumni should an emergency arise. Once a K9 Kismet Dog, always a K9 Kismet Dog. This isn’t a catch phrase; this is a core value.
