My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Dakota:

I have the potential to be a sweet, gentle companion with a very cat-savvy adopter who is willing to put in the extra effort to help me come out of my shell.
I have excellent history living with other cats! I would most often be found cuddling with my similarly-aged feline friend.

Expectations should be kept low at first, and understand that I am going to need time (weeks to a month or more) to show more of my true personality. Based on history in my last home, expect me to always be a bit skittish with new people, so my adopter should offer me a low-traffic, quiet home. I will do best with the people within my bubble (after time) but I wont be the type of cat to go up and greet visitors.

I will need a very slow introduction to my new home. I should start in one quiet room with managed hiding places and gradually given more access to the house as I settle in. Keep expectations for me very low as I had lived in my previous home for multiple years and would still more often than not be hiding when startled by noises or changes in my environment. It cannot be stressed enough that I need to be allowed to adapt at my own pace. I am who I am, and I need a patient, understanding person who will not push or expect me to be anything other than who I am. Again, my home should be low-traffic and predictable with as little things/changes that could scare me.

A fear-free vet is recommended. I may need sedative help for exams in the future I had a hard transition into the shelter and had a sedated exam when I arrived here at the shelter. My adopter is encouraged to reach out with any questions on how to help me adjust at home!

Compatibility:
Dogs: No thank you!
Cats: Possibly see above, would probably enjoy the company of another mellow cat with a slow introduction and management
Kids: Older quiet, cat-savvy, comfortable in reading cat-body language and wont put pressure on her

The shelter is open Tuesday through Sunday from noon - 4:30 pm, with no appointment needed to meet available cats.
