My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Cornelius, a gentle and sweet corn snake in search of a forever family—could that be you?

Cornelius is an angelic companion, with a calm temperament and a love for watching the world go by, often perching with their head right by the glass. They enjoy spending time in their hide and are a quiet observer, perfectly content to let life unfold around them. They do look forward to interaction time with the family though, too.

Cornelius has lived harmoniously with cats, dogs, and even young children. Their gentle nature even won over a few people who had a fear of snakes, changing their minds completely. During the colder winter months, Cornelius may hide for long periods, only surfacing after weeks of rest, but they become lively and active again when spring arrives.

Now, Cornelius is seeking their third home—fourth, if you count their time in rescue. They spent 14 years with their first family before being surrendered due to circumstances beyond their control. A kind woman adopted them right away, planning to care for them forever. But after 4.5 yrs included getting married and expecting a second child, she realized that Cornelius wasn’t receiving the attention they deserved, and their time together would become even more limited. Sad to make this decision, she committed to waiting 4 months for a space to open at the rescue, the only place she trusted to care for her beloved snake.

Corn snakes like Cornelius can live long, healthy lives—currently at 18-19 yrs old they can live up to 23 years or more. The record for the oldest corn snake in captivity was 32 years and 3 months. years with proper care. Adopting Cornelius means making a meaningful commitment to a long-term friend who can grow up to 3-5 feet in length and weigh between 2 to 3 pounds.

Cornelius will need a secure habitat with the right diet, substrate, temperature, and humidity, but the rescue will provide all the guidance you need to prepare for their arrival.

Cornelius has been waiting patiently for a new family, could you be the one to offer them the forever home they deserve?

If you’d like to learn more about Cornelius and see if they’re the perfect match, fill out the quick adoption application on the rescue website, here is the link - https://www.smallbreedrescue.org/Home/AnimalDetails/13530, and an adoption counselor will be in touch soon!

More about this rescue

Small Breed Rescue of Southern California is an all-volunteer, non-profit, foster based organization funded by donations. We are dedicated to rescuing small breed dogs, small reptiles and select exotic pets primarily from public shelters and other rescues. Being committed to keeping administrative expenses low, virtually every dollar received goes directly to the care of the animals.

Our rescue is uniquely structured to rehabilitate animals who are at high risk of euthanasia due to manageable behavioral challenges, such as dogs who are declining in a shelter environment or reptiles / exotics that have not been properly handled over their lifetime. We develop relationships to accommodate these specific assistance needs, which is what differentiates us from other rescue organizations.

We have assembled a foster team that consists of experienced individuals who bring particular skills from the animal welfare industry. This enables us to grow, educate and enrich our foster community in a manner that supports our specific needs and those of our animals.

Our group remains interested in and committed to the welfare of the animals beyond the adoption process by providing education, training tips, resource references, and an open door policy to our adopters.
