5 year old Theodora was rescued from CACC in early August, after she arrived there as a stray. Thea as we call her went straight into an amazing foster home where she was able to get over her bad case of kennel cough, her raging ear infection, and some skin issues she had come in with. Thea was thriving, doing greta on walks, meeting other dogs and people, and being able to free roam the house when her foster mom was gone.
In late August her foster noticed Thea had odd episodes of starting to bump into things in the home she knew so well, and losing her way in the house. A couple of days after those symptoms appeared, Thea went completely blind. We immediately sent her and her foster to VEG Buffalo Grove where she stayed for 7 hours and had seemingly every test under the sun to make sure there were not any serious underlying medical issues. Thea's labs were normal, thankfully, and her attitude and appetite and everything else remained unchanged. Thea was diagnosed with a condition called Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration (SARD), which causes rapid and permanent blindness in dogs.
Thea is now blind, but thankfully Thea was in her foster home for few weeks before losing her sight, so she has been doing relatively well navigating and following her foster mom's voice, as well as a bell.
Thea will need a patient adopter willing to give Thea time adjust to this huge change in Thea's life, as well as the fact that she will need to get used to a brand new home. However, we have had several blind dogs in our rescue in the past and we know that they can live perfectly normal lives! One of the many amazing things about dogs is how resilient they are, and they never wallow in self-pity.
We do not see any reason this beautiful, differently-abled girl cannot land a wonderful adoptive home like many before her. She is healthy and she is happy. For now, she is enjoying rolls in the grass and the warm sun on her face, and the love of her foster mama.
Theodora's adoption fee is sponsored by a generous donor. This animal is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.
