Meet Nero, a perfectly imperfect (mostly perfect) lab mix!

Sweet Nero was found alongside Highway 71 near the Austin airport, and was brought in to AAC by a Good Samaritan who couldn’t keep him. The AAC vets noticed his slightly wonky front leg and realized that he had lived with it for years - and he gets around just fine, thank you very much!

Volunteers all agree that four-year old Nero is one of the friendliest, sweetest, funniest buddies at AAC, loving his walks and playtime! He’s very housetrained and knows “sit” so we think he’s been in a home before.

Nero is a little under 70 lbs and was able to get into a volunteer’s car on his own, with just a tiny helping hand! He took a special trip to a local TV station and he behaved like the superstar we know he is!!

Nero is cuddly and loves laps, so clear some space for this friendly, treat-motivated, funny, adorable buddy!

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats & kittens up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
$30 small animals
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

The Austin Animal Center is open for adoptions every day from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please note, Adoption and Pet Resource Center lines close at 6:00 p.m. We're closed Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Thanksgiving Day to give our staff some time with family.
Interested adopters should come to the shelter during business hours to meet with a counselor start looking for a pet who'll be a good fit. Our counselors and volunteers are happy to help with that process.
