Matika I can`t decide whether I was named after the electric drill or the Native American photographer. Regardless, I am a beautiful 7-year-old Tortoiseshell girl. I was surrendered to the HSHC on June 4th because my owner passed away. Boy, I was one unhappy kitty when I arrived! I hid in my crate and would hiss and swat at anyone who tried to mess with me. I was not a very well-socialized cat, and I continued to feel hostile until the shelter sent me to a foster home where I could decompress. My foster mom figured me out after spending a few weeks letting me unwind. Here are her impressions of me. 1.I can be very loving and affectionate, getting into your lap, sleeping on you, and enjoying being petted. However, I can also be a `moody Matika,` preferring to be left alone. I may have a bit of sass, but at my core, I`m a cat who values love and attention. I`m not the type to cling to you 24-7. I`m pretty independent and can keep myself entertained, making me a low-maintenance pet! 2.I thrive in a calm environment and would be happiest as the only pet in the household. I`m learning to tolerate the resident cat, but I get agitated if I sense she is nearby. With the freedom to roam and explore without the worry of other animals, I would genuinely feel more like a part of the family. Providing a calm environment is crucial for my well-being. 3.I have excellent litterbox manners, a good appetite, and love to play! 4.I would be most comfortable in a home with older children or all adults, where I can enjoy my space and interact on my own terms. I appreciate a respectful and understanding approach. 5.Whoever adopts me must understand you won`t immediately see the true Matika. My foster mom`s daughter is my favorite and has successfully gotten me to snuggle. But I need a slow, gradual introduction to people. Please let the HSHC know if you would like to meet me. 12-3-24

With an open admission policy, a No-Kill philosophy, and more than 3,100 animals crossing our threshold each year, we have still maintained a 98% placement rate over the last 3 years.
This is an amazing feat for any organization…let alone one that takes in some of the most abused, injured and seriously ill animals imaginable.
