Matika I can't decide whether I was named after the electric drill or the Native American photographer. Regardless, I am a beautiful 7-year-old Tortoiseshell girl. I was surrendered to the HSHC on June 4th because my owner passed away. Boy, was I one unhappy kitty when I arrived! I hid in my crate and would hiss and swat at anyone who tried to mess with me. I was not a very well-socialized cat, and I continued to feel hostile until the shelter sent me to a foster home where I could decompress. My foster mom figured me out after spending a few weeks letting me unwind. Here is the gist of her impressions of me. 1. I may have a bit of sass, but at my core, I'm a cat who values love and attention. But I'm also not the type to cling to you 24-7. I'm quite independent and can keep myself entertained! 2. I thrive in a calm environment and would be happiest as the only pet in the household. The residential cat in the home gives me the willies! I have my own room, but I get agitated if I sense she is nearby. With the freedom to roam and explore without the worry of other animals, I can truly feel like a part of the family. 3. I can be very loving and affectionate, getting into your lap, sleeping on you, and enjoying being petted. However, I can also be a "moody Matika," preferring to be left alone. 4. I have excellent litterbox manners, a good appetite, and love to play! 5. I would be most comfortable in a home with older children or all adults, where I can enjoy my space and interact on my own terms. I appreciate a respectful and understanding approach, and I'm sure we can build a great relationship together. 10-6-24

With an open admission policy, a No-Kill philosophy, and more than 3,100 animals crossing our threshold each year, we have still maintained a 98% placement rate over the last 3 years.
This is an amazing feat for any organization…let alone one that takes in some of the most abused, injured and seriously ill animals imaginable.
