My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

#MadLoveSkelly located in Texas

Dear MAD pack,

My name is Skelly and I am a 3 year old malinois who is low drive, snuggly and looking for my family.

Family is a weird concept for me, I had one once, you see if you don't have a family in Texas, your chances aren't great, so for three years or so I did live with someone. That all changed though early this summer when I found my life turned upside down.

At some point I found myself out alone in the world, I ran and ran, cars would scare me, a lot of near misses, people would chase me, other dogs would give me silly looks, I didn't feel like I belonged.

The hot Texas sun wore me down and after a few months, I found myself tired, skinny and  without a lot of hope. The days turned long and the food I needed most was getting harder and harder to find. I didn't have the energy to keep searching and I slowly started to give up.

In September I found this very nice shady tree, I fit really well under it and I crawled in, closed my eyes and was ready for sleep to wash in. There was some commotion and I saw someone taking pictures of me, I could see she was concerned, about what I didn't know.

She approached me, usually I would run, but I was so tired of running, I let it happen. She invited me into her home, offered me a squishy bed, a safe kennel and food, fresh, tasty food. She looked worried, she was trying to find someone to take me, I felt bad that I was so scary.

She found some MAD people who were willing to take a chance on me. My head looked very funny, there wasn't any muscle left there, you could count all my bones in my body, I weighed 35 pounds, They told me I would have refeeding syndrome. I had worms in my heart, I was intact and my blood tests weren't great.

There was a lady there who told me I was a sweet boy, she bought me some jammies, showed me Bluey and wrapped me in safety, I felt relief. I felt loved.

After a few days we went on a car ride, this one was different because there were a lot of emotions at the same time. I felt love, I felt excited, I felt worried, and I was nervous. Me and my new friend met a new lady, she was something called a foster.

She felt different because she didn't look at me with worry, she looked right through my tough facade and saw my heart, she told me I was a sweet boy and that I would be ok. How did she know?

This new lady let me call her my foster mom, she took me to get a bath, whatever, i thought the aroma wasn't too awful :) She let me get sunshine, but I wasn't running from it, I was soaking it up and she let me come inside her home.

Foster mom had a lot of new friends at her house, she had a very small dog that looked like a hot dog, hot dogs are delicious, but I was a very good boy, I did not eat this hot dog! She had another spotted dog who was very fun to play with and chase, he made me feel like a puppy again. She also had a dog that was a missile with fur, she was extra cool, but I even did good with her. Finally there was this small dog that made weird meowing noises, I thought that was strange, but we rolled with it and the meowing dog was my friend too.

I gained a lot of healthy weight here, I felt so much better! I looked better and I had somehing called a fan club! They like Skelly updates...me? I was Skelly!

Next I got to meet another family, they were my foster mom and dad too! They had lots of those missiles with fur, I like the girl ones the best! This foster family started treating my heartworms, they started training me and they are working on my confidence, I am getting better and better at trusting the world again!

All of these people are on my team and they are all working together to find my family, I am a bit worried because last time I had a "family" it didn't work out too well for me, but my team, some of them who I have never gotten to meet, says they are making sure that I go to only the perfect family.

They ask me and my foster family what kind of things I want. My fosters say boring things like, someone who is patient, someone who will give me time to trust them, someone who wants to have a heart dog....I am more concerned about this family having a very comfy couch, a leash for walkies, but only when I don't feel like a couch potato, and snackies, if there are no snackies, there is no deal!

I would like to have some fur siblings, those are cool, I am very laid back, so I fit in well with any dogs that come my way, Kids would be ok too, but they have to understand that I need to decide when I am ready. And did I mention snackies?

Anyway, I am still looking for you family, I am still searching for someone to love me, I ride well in the car, I can travel and I can come to you! I take a minute to be ok, but I am so worth it!

What do you say, will you invite me home?

Lots of love,
Skelly
