Katanya is in a foster home! Let`s see how she is doing:
`I couldn`t get Katanya out of my mind from our Expawdition and since she hasn`t had any successful meets at the shelter, I thought she may need a fresh start at my house. Sooo she`s my new foster. For now, we’re going to work on independence and confidence; she`s got a very secure yard to freely explore, is taking walks in the neighborhood to meet people and dogs, and has a comfy room to herself where she can snuggle and play with her toys. surprisingly, this girl is house trained! walks ok on leash but must be very vigilant as she`s strong when spooked loves to snuggle, bit of a lap dog great in the bath, hops right in, stays still good with other dogs, both male and female plays in spray of hose, gets zoomies after likes to play fetch, is clumsy at catching but its adorable plays with her toys on her own (self entertained) sensitive to you (I fell and she ran right back to me, nuzzling my face, very sweet) non-destructive, even though she’s young mostly sleeps through night (does get up 1x to play a little, then back to sleep) She likes to be with her person. Although curious to check things out, she feels safer when you’re close. She does need protection from herself until she calms down and learns that everything isn’t scary and her home is safe. So she’ll need someone that is committed to giving her the patience and consistency for insecure dogs. Definitely a securely fenced yard. Someone strong who can be vigilant on the leash. Besides those temporary things, she really is a cool girl. She’s strikingly beautiful with her lanky gait and goofy paws. She LOVES water and I can see endless days in the summer swimming everywhere. She’s smart, curious about everything, and would make someone a super loyal buddy for daytime adventures and night time snuggies. I think she would do best with meets off site, so I`m happy to arrange at my home.

`Katanya - Expawdition Hopped right into car, but because she is an 85 lb nervous Nelly she wants to be in the front so I had to tether her in the back. She was spooked by large trucks going by and anything noisy, so I kept the car calm as we headed for a long walk at Noland. For such a nervous girl she was surprisingly pretty good on the leash! She obvi needs leash training but she doesn’t go nuts…she’s not interested in squirrels whi

PRAS supports the Adopter’s Welcome Philosophy in removing unnecessary barriers in the adoption process, and trust that our adopters have come prepared. Our dedicated Adoption Specialists are more than ready to answer any of your questions about the animal you are looking to adopt. We will provide you with the appropriate education for the best success as they transition from our shelter to your home.
Check In
Once you have seen an animal you would like to meet and possibly adopt; you must check in with our front desk team.
Fill out Animal Questionnaire
If you haven’t already done so- you will then be asked to fill out an Animal Interest Questionnaire. Once this is complete hand it back with our front desk staff who will then place your name on our Meet and Greet Board. PRAS does it’s very best to accommodate as many adoptions as we can during our open Adoption Hours.
Once your name has been placed on the board and we have confirmed your meet and greet, you can walk freely through the building until your Adoption Specialist is available to meet with you.
Meet with our Adoption Specialists
You and your Adoption Specialist will then sit down to discuss the animal and it’s known history while housed at PRAS. Then the Specialist will bring the animal in to meet with you. If you and your Specialist agree that this is a good match for you and your family, you will then be able to finalize your adoption the same day.
Make it official
After you have met the animal you are then ready to make them an official member of your family. You will sit down with a guest services staff member to finalize your adoption contract and receive all of the animal’s records.

Filling out an adoption survey head of time does not serve as an adoption hold for that animal. PRAS Adoptions are on a first available basis.

The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter (PRAS) is a collaborative venture supported by four separate Hampton Roads communities: Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, and York County. This 30,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility is managed and operated by the City of Newport News on behalf of the four jurisdictions. This "open-admission" shelter contains a full service veterinary clinic and has capacity for approximately 100 dogs and 180 cats, as well as pocket pets and other small companion animals. The shelter's primary responsibilities include holding stray animals until they can be reunited with their owners, rehoming owner-surrendered pets, and facilitating pet adoptions. The shelter also houses animal control offices for the participating jurisdictions.
