My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Say hello to Zara!

Zara is a 75-pound Mastiff mix that we estimate to be around 2 years-old. This sweet girl has taken quickly to her new foster family and everything that comes with her new-found life! We don’t know a lot about Zara’s history as she was originally found as a stray, but she has quickly proven to be the face of a burly pup with the heart of a lap dog.

This adaptable girl has quickly caught onto the new house rules and is doing well with training. Her ideal forever family will be one that has experience with large-breed dogs and is dedicated toward consistent training.

Zara is working on leash training and is doing well. She loves her long walks and zoomies in the backyard! A fenced yard would be a major bonus but is not required. As long as Zara’s activity is consistent, she is a happy girl! She is working through a mild case of stranger danger when on walks, but this is expected to improve with time.

Thus far, Zara has made major strides with potty training and knows where and when to do her business. When her foster family isn’t home, she has access to a large dog run and does well. She is likely to do well with crate training if necessary. She has been known to occasionally bark/howl when home alone, so shared walls may not be ideal. This is something that may change given the right fit.

She is a big fan of the other pets in the house and is having fun getting to know them. She spends a lot of time with her fellow resident dogs and has shown a couple instances of resource guarding but this is getting better with time. She is largely unbothered by the resident cats and spends time with them both in and outdoors!

We do not yet know how Zara does around children. Given her size and that we are still learning about her, we recommend that introductions with children be slow and controlled. If Zara’s prospective family has a child in the home, a meet and greet may be necessary prior to adoption.

Zara is ready to meet her forever home! With consistent structure and training, she will be sure to grow into the best companion someone could ask for. If you’re interested in learning more about Zara and think she might be a good fit, fill out an application using the link below to learn more! Whoever becomes her family will feel lucky they did.

The adoption fee is $450. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
