My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Iris is a shy, sensitive girl who is likely a Chihuahua/Boston Terrier cross. She's around 3 years old, and she weighs about 25 lbs. She is spayed and up to date on vaccines. She loves treats (particularly bacon and peanut butter flavors), head scratches, belly rubs when she's in the mood, and chasing bugs outside.
Iris loves company, although she is initially shy. She may not always come right up to you, but she typically likes to be in the same room. She will require a caregiver with LOTS of patience and love who is willing to give her the time to open up. Just give her a little space, and she'll love you for it.
Iris does well with other dogs and would probably benefit from a companion who is confident and can show her the ropes. She needs a consistent daily routine - she's a smart one and learns fairly quickly.
Iris is fearful of storms, fireworks, loud car bass systems, crates, and exercise pens. She knows her name and usually comes when called, and her foster family is currently working on this daily, as well as leash training. She needs a secure, fenced yard.
Although she has been through a lot and is fearful by nature, Iris is a sweet dog and has already made immense progress with her foster family in the few months they've had her. Despite her fears, she gets braver every day and wants to be loved! She is just unsure about life still.
Iris does great at home alone and isn't destructive. She usually just lies on the couch and naps with a toy.
Housebreaking is coming along well. Iris currently goes potty outside and rarely has accidents inside as long as she is let out a few times a day. Iris likes her privacy while eating or going potty. She seems to feel especially vulnerable in these situations. She does get excited for meal times!
Iris would do well in a home with older kids who understand how to respect a dog's boundaries, but may not be a good fit for families with young children. A calm environment is where Iris thrives as she is very sensitive to her humans' energy.

Additional adoption info

We want to make this easy and we want to be sure that the dog you are interested in is a fit for you. Finding a dog or pup that works with your schedule and lifestyle is key to our placement. The questions on the application help us know if the dog you choose will do well in your home. Number of hours your dog is home alone, fenced yard, exercise plan, other family members – pets included; those are important things we want to discuss with you and your chosen canine.  We do require a vet reference.

The application is on our website: Istodaymydayrescue.org. Complete and send. You can expect a reply within 24-48 hours.  As all of our dogs are in foster care, we will then contact the foster home and arrange a meeting.  The foster home might want to do a home visit or you might meet at a convenient location. If it is a good fit, some adoptions can be completed at that time of the meeting.

All of our dogs are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. All of our dogs are micro chipped, wormed, heartworm tested if over 6 months, on heartworm preventative, treated for fleas, and have age appropriate vaccines. Pups under 16 weeks require ongoing vaccines every 2 to 3 weeks.

More about this rescue

“Is today my day?” That is what every shelter dog asks. “Is today the day that I find a home, get a family, discover that I am a best friend”? We want to tell those dogs: “Yes, it is!”

We are a foster based rescue who aims to serve south central Missouri, an area with a low human population and a high canine population. Our mission is to help dogs from this area find homes in the St. Louis area through adoptions and transfers. After covering spay/neuter costs, 20% of each adoption fee goes to our emergency medical fund so we can help canine accident victims, pay for emergency C-sections, and other health needs. The remainder of the adoption fee goes to the dogs.

We are foster based and do not have a facility. Moms and pups are our focus, but we will help any dog we can. We are only able to accept a dog when a foster home is available. All dogs and pups are current on vaccines, micro-chipped, heartworm tested, wormed, and treated for fleas and ticks. All dogs over 12 weeks have been altered; if too young for this procedure, a spay/neuter reimbursement is provided when the procedure is done.
