My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Give a warm welcome to Dwayne! This cutie pie is a Shih Tzu and estimated to be around 4 years-old. Weighing in at 15 lbs, he is a certified lap dog who is ready to give you all the love you deserve. But reader beware, he may show his love by stealing your shoes!

We don’t know a lot about Dwayne’s background but he has already proven to be extremely affectionate and playful! He has adapted quickly to his foster family and house-rules but does have a couple of quirks. He would do best in a home that has a fenced yard and preferably a doggy door so that he has the flexibility to do his business on his own time. A fenced yard is ideal as Dwayne is working on building his trust with his new people and can be considered a flight risk. A single-family home is also ideal for Dwayne. He is not likely to do well with outside noises that come with living in an apartment, and can be vocal when he is feeling lonely. Therefore, a home without shared walls is preferred.

Dwayne is working on crate training and is learning to be crated for longer periods of time. He enjoys the luxury of having his foster family around for long periods throughout the day and he hopes his ideal forever family would have a similar routine. Dwayne is working through some separation anxiety. With consistent routine and training, his separation anxiety is likely to improve. Dwayne’s ideal forever family will be one that is dedicated to giving him a consistent balance routine and activity.

Dwayne has had limited interactions with other animals while in his foster home. He is good at not barking at other dogs, but he tends to get anxious if others bark at him. He may do well with a calmer resident dog or one that can give him space to get comfortable. As far as cats go, we have not observed him with cats quite yet. If Dwayne’s forever family has resident pets, a meet-and-greet may be recommended prior to adoption.

He does, however, do very well around children. He is curious and eager to give them a sniff, but respectful of their size and boundaries. In future introductions, we recommend calm and controlled introductions as we are still learning Dwayne’s personality.

Dwayne is ready to meet his forever family! With consistent love and routine, he will be sure to blossom into the ideal furry friend. If you’re interested in learning more about Dwayne and think he might be a good fit, fill out an application using the link below to learn more! Whoever becomes his family will feel lucky they did.

The adoption fee is $450. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%.
Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown.
Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
