My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Oh, Emmit… what a story this guy has to tell.

This ruggedly handsome 3.5-year-old hasn’t exactly had a life of luxury. We may not know all the details, but from the way he was found, it’s clear he didn’t start out as anyone’s cherished pet. No, Emmit was probably left to fend for himself, possibly cast out after failing as a livestock guardian or just ignored as a “farm dog” that nobody cared about. Whatever his past may have been, Emmit wandered up to a rural home with a female Pyr at his side, both knocking on death’s door. The property owner called animal control, and thanks to OAA, they received care. Sadly, his companion didn’t make it. But Emmit, despite severe anemia and malnutrition, held on. He joined our fluffy butt family shortly after, and let me tell you, he’s been blossoming ever since.

From being severely emaciated and nearly bald due to parasites, Emmit has transformed into a true showstopper. He’s up to 92 pounds now, with more weight to gain, so yes—he’s destined to be a full-fledged polar bear. While house life may be new to Emmit, he has no qualms about being your lap dog. Yes, you heard that right – he firmly believes he’s a tiny Chihuahua and expects you to treat him as such. Got a lap? He’s on it. Thinking about getting up? He’s thinking about how to keep you right where you are. If there were an Emmit-sized handbag, he’d probably hop right in, ready to accompany you on all your adventures, with zero regard for his size. This big boy doesn’t know he’s big – and that’s just part of his charm. Now, Emmit’s past might have been rough, but he hasn’t let that dampen his spirit or the size of his heart. He’s a lover through and through, and when those soulful eyes look up at you, good luck resisting his charm. You cannot and will not find a more loving and gentle-souled dog than this guy right here. Emmit loves everyone. Other dogs, cats, and people. He has no problem making friends with anyone and everything that will give him attention. He knows what it feels like to be abandoned and left out, and his goal is to make sure that everyone knows just how loved and adored they are.

Emmit has not started playing with the other dogs yet, but we do think in time he may. He still has a lot to learn about getting to be a dog and have fun, but right now he is a pretty chill dude. He is indifferent to the other dogs and spends his days seeking attention from his people. He loves going outside and romping around, but he is usually one of the first ones back at the door. He has no interest in staying outside longer than necessary. He has played the role of an outside dog and he has no interest in ever going back. He knows that the A/C is where it is at(because, obviously, that’s where you are!). No more outdoor-only life for this guy. He’s done his time in the elements and now prefers the cushy life – think dog beds, couches, and a personal entourage of humans at his beck and call. He’s not pushy about attention, though. If you’re busy, he’ll just plop down with his big ole head on your lap or beside you, waiting patiently for pets. He’s got the whole "I’m an easygoing house dog" thing down pat. Want to go upstairs? Cool, he’ll follow. Bathroom? No problem, he’s coming with. He’s not needy, just incredibly loyal and sweet – the kind of dog who will happily flop next to you wherever you are, offering silent, soulful companionship.

You might notice Emmit always seems to have the saddest eyes, but don’t worry – there’s a twinkle in there that’s starting to grow. He’s slowly realizing that the soft couch and warm belly rubs aren’t going anywhere. He’s even been caught rolling around on his back, looking just a little silly, basking in the joy of having a real home. We can’t wait to see those sad eyes turn into full-on sparkle. He is a pretty well-mannered boy so we think he would be a great candidate to take places with you. His leash manners are pretty good considering he was just introduced to the leash not too long ago. With a little practice, we think he’d enjoy walks and outings—he’s not the overly excitable type, so he’d probably do great meeting new dogs and people on your adventures. That being said, if you’re more of a homebody, Emmit’s perfectly content with that too. Give him a comfy bed, a couch to lounge on, and a family to shower him with love, and he’ll be the happiest boy in the world.

Given how amazing Emmit is, I am sure it is no surprise to hear that he is housebroken. He also has not attempted to chew anything up or get into things that aren't his. He has not discovered the joy of toys. We hope that may change one day, but for the time being he has no interest in them. His main choice of entertainment is getting pets and attention from his people. And when they aren't available he is napping. Emmit has no experience being kenneled and is allowed free-roam of the house and does excellent.

Whether you’re a more active family or prefer quiet evenings at home, Emmit is ready to fill your life with love and those classic Pyr cuddle sessions. All he’s asking for is a cozy spot to call his own, some humans to adore, and maybe a sibling or two (he’s easygoing with other dogs). He’s not high-maintenance – just high on love.
