My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Shayla isn’t just a cat—she’s a whole mood. Bold, confident, and completely unapologetic about her boundaries, Shayla knows exactly who she is and what she wants: space, respect, and a little admiration from a safe distance.

She’s not big on fuss. In fact, too much petting, noise, or activity stresses her out. She’s got diva tendencies, and we love her for it. That’s why she’s part of our Working Cat Program—she thrives in an environment where she has room to roam, a job to do (like mouse patrol), and the freedom to interact only when she’s in the mood.

That said, Shayla isn’t all standoffish—when she feels safe and in control, she’ll cozy up beside you on the couch, soaking in your warmth while you binge your latest show. Just remember: her rules, her terms. Pet her where she wants, when she wants, and keep your technique flawless—she has high standards, and she’s not afraid to judge.

🗣️ From her foster: “She’s super confident, curious, and always exploring. Loves a good head rub on a corner or rolling on a rough patch of floor. She’ll snuggle next to you, purring like crazy—until she’s had enough. Then it’s back to queen mode.”

Shayla may not be a fit for every home, but for someone with a mellow vibe, a quiet space, and a love for fiercely independent spirits, she could be the perfect match. She’s not just a cat—she’s an experience.

More about this shelter

The Maryland SPCA connects wonderful pets to loving owners. We are not affiliated with any national animal organization, and we do not receive any government or United Way funding. Our mission is to prevent cruelty and neglect of animals through fostering the humane relationship between animals and people. We operate primarily in the Greater Baltimore Metropolitan area.

To make sure that our dogs and cats do not contribute to the pet overpopulation problem, every one is spayed or neutered before going into a new home. The cost is included in the adoption fee, as are the costs of shots and other necessary care. In addition, a free Positive Pooch class is available to our dog adopters.

There is no set time limit for how long an animal can remain in our adoption program. As long as an animal maintains general good health and a sound temperament, we keep him or her until adopted. We pride ourselves on providing premium care to the animals in a clean, pleasant environment. Our adoption staff works diligently to pair up adopters with the best animal match for their homes and lifestyles.

We transport animals from other shelters to our adoption center to help more animals get adopted. We also help pet owners find new homes for their pets so their animals don’t need to enter shelter care.
