Moo Moo is a big handsome guy who loves to have attention and spend time with people. He came to us as a stray who was likely abandoned and is SO happy to be inside again. He gets along with most other cats but is somewhat fearful as he was picked on while living outdoors so hisses and sometimes growls at them.
Moo Moo has tested positive for FIV, also known at kitty Aids. Just like with people it is NOT contagious through casual contact. It's safe to share food, water, and litter box with a negative cat. FIV is only passed by mating, or a deep bite wound, where saliva from the positive cat enters the blood stream of another kitty. This is very rare in socialized house cats.
FIV cats can have a shorter life span in part due to the fact that with a compromised immune system they are more prone to contracting infections. FIV positive cats must live strictly indoors to reduce the chances of contracting something dangerous. Most vets recommend Lysine, an immune system booster twice a day, which is very affordable.
It is NOT a death sentence! FIV positive cats can live well into their teens and have a very normal life. Moo Moo is currently living side by side in a foster home with several negative cats.
