My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Apollo is an approximately 3 1/2 year old black male with cropped ears. He is all black other than the thin strip of white on his chest and a bit on a couple of toes. He is quite long and tall but is naturally narrow chested and thin, which means that he is healthy at about the 115 lbs. he weighs now. He just recently got a clean bill of health from the vet and is on no medications other than heartworm. Apollo came back to rescue, after being adopted in October 2009, due to his family having financial reasons. It is very likely that the man who first drew Marmaduke had a Dane like Apollo… he is a gentle goofy giant who is in the prime of his life and loving it. He runs and romps and plays with reckless abandon and then sometimes crashes into things out of exuberance. There is not a mean bone in his body, but does occasionally forget how big he is or where his feet are. Prior to coming to foster care, he was in a kennel for a several weeks and in spite of that, he had no trouble making the transition to home life. He is also a model guest having stolen or destroyed nothing in the weeks he has been here and he has been perfectly house broken with no accidents after being left for long periods of time. Apollo has been very easy to care for. He is a good eater who might be able to be free feed once he is in his forever home. Most of the time he is pretty dry mouthed, but he is not the neatest drinker or when he has been running he can be a bit slobbery. We don’t know too much about his past, but I can tell that he grew up starved for attention because he is very loving and never seems to get enough love and affection. This will be a huge perk once winter arrives since he is very warm and the best snuggle dog I have ever met. The only trade off is that he is definitely a bed hog. He has relaxed since arriving and won’t follow me from room to room, but will definitely go up or downstairs to make sure he knows where I am and to make sure that if there is any affection being handed out, he will be first, second and third in line. Someone has worked with Apollo and he does have some manners, including sit, lie down and a pretty soft mouth, but sometimes he gets excited and forgets what he is supposed to do, but it is not too hard to regroup his attention when that happens. So far, I have not had a counter surfing incident, but since he is taller than counter height, I have been careful not to leave him an opportunity. Not sure what he would do with it, but blind faith that an unsupervised steak on the counter or table would be safe seems unwise. Apollo does walk on lead well and will listen; the only challenge can be if he comes across a small animal like a rabbit or squirrel. Although Apollo does not currently live with another dog, has shown to be very good with the other dogs including the menagerie in the neighborhood including both large and small breeds. He did live with another Dane before coming back to rescue. He does know how to play with other dogs and I would feel comfortable taking him to a dog park, but would introduce him to that gradually, mainly since he has no clue that every dog is not as big as he is. He has met a cat and was a little too enthusiastic, so while I would say that he was not cat aggressive, I also think it would be best to put him in a cat free home. He has chosen to ignore the reptiles unless the cage doors are open and then he is curious, but not aggressive in any way. Apollo does not live with kids but he does ok with them (my neighbors twins and my nephew are 4) although a excitable. I have not had him around smaller kids, but she seems to do fine with older ones that he meets on walks. Much like any Dane, Apollo does spend a lot of time sprawled out on something soft, but when he is awake, he just wants to be loved a lot and is ready to go to an attention filled house where he can thrive
Update 8/29/10 - Apollo's foster home had noticed that he walks a bit odd. We had x-rays taken, and can see a definite narrowing in one of his vertebrae. Other than walking odd, he currently shows absolutely no problems with this... he runs, jumps, and plays just like a normal dog.
