My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

**Note: Geumsung is currently in Korea but we are looking for her forever home in the GTA. Her flight from Korea to Toronto is scheduled for Sep 13.

Background: Geumsung was born to a brave mother who was rescued from the harsh dog meat trade. While her two brothers are now happily settled in Vancouver and Toronto, and her mother has found a loving home in Korea, it’s now Geumsung’s turn. She has been living with other dogs at our partner shelter, patiently waiting for her chance at a forever home.

Personality and Socialization: Geumsung is a sweet, friendly dog with a medium energy level. She’s smart and easy-going, and enjoys playing with other dogs, especially those of similar size and energy. After some fun, she knows how to relax and is very laid-back. Geumsung would be a great fit for a family looking for a second dog. While she can be a little shy around new people at first, once she warms up, she becomes very friendly and affectionate.

Behaviors: Before arriving at the boarding facility, Geumsung and her siblings attended dog training school, where she learned important skills like leash manners and socialization. She’s comfortable with car rides, baths, and walks, and enjoys spending time outdoors. However, she hasn’t had experience with cats or young children.

Health and Diet: Geumsung is neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on all her vaccinations. She also takes monthly preventatives for internal and external parasites. She’s a healthy girl, ready to bring peace and love to her forever home. She enjoys dry kibbles twice a day. Currently, there are no known allergies.

Ideal Home: The perfect adopter for Geumsung would be someone with plenty of time to spend with her—perhaps someone who works from home or is retired. It would be ideal if she had another friendly and playful dog of a similar size, as she loves playing with other dogs and gains confidence from their company. Geumsung’s sweet and mild-mannered personality will make her a wonderful companion for anyone lucky enough to welcome her into their home.

More about this rescue

Free Korean Dogs (FKD) is a registered charity in Canada (BN:80580 0166RR0001).

Founded in Toronto, Canada on July 1st, 2015, our organizations rescue dogs from Korea’s dog meat trade and other at-risk circumstances and find their forever loving homes in Canada and the US.

Millions of dogs are slaughtered for meat consumption in Korea every year. Most of them are kept in tiny, overcrowded cages in dog meat farms and provided no water or shelter from the elements, and given only scraps of waste to eat. It is also common practice for dogs to be brutally tortured prior to slaughter as it is believed to enhance flavor and nutritional healing properties, despite an overwhelming lack evidence to support these claims.

Korea is the only country in the world that commercially farms dogs for food. Lack of legislation regulating the Korean dog meat trade result in the lack of standards for safety or humane treatment. Simply speaking, dogs can be obtained by any means, whether stray or farmed, and treated in unfathomable inhumane manners without consequence. The dog meat trade in Korea is a legislative gray area and political landmine that nobody in power wants to address.

Our international rescue and adoption program saves over hundreds of dogs each year from the Korean dog meat trade and finds their homes in Canada. Since 2015, we have shut down two dog meat farm operations, rescued over two hundreds dogs from the dog meat trade, and found forever homes for over seven hundreds dogs rescued from euthanasia or the risk of being forced into the meat trade.

We also promote public awareness to create a cultural shift from cruelty to compassion for dogs in Korea through campaigns, protests, and events. Through rescue, rehabilitation, and education, we hope one day all dogs and animals can lead peaceful and happy lives.
