My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

STROMBOLI ACCT-A-173334 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Stromboli must have confirmed placement with an ADOPTER or RESCUE PARTNER by WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25th at at 10:00 a.m. Should Stromboli's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.

Stromboli is an adult male mixed breed dog who came to ACCT as a stray with another dog. Since his intake, he has been wiggly and friendly with people, and made several friends! Unfortunately, he has been passed over for some time now and is desperate to find his forever family!

Despite being an absolute love with people, Stromboli does have some preferences for his new home. He cannot live with cats or other small animals, as he has a very strong prey drive and before being picked up to come to ACCT, joined his canine companion in an incident that resulted in a cat's death. While Stromboli has had some good dog meets in the shelter, and did come in with another dog, he has also had some that didn't go as well so he may be dog-selective and prefer an only-dog home, or do better in an environment where he can be slowly and safely acclimated to a companion. And, while Stromboli does love yard time and enjoys a good long walk, he can be strong and a little rambunctious so will do best in a home without small children.

Once in a home that fits his needs, Stromboli will prove his smarts with his (very treat-motivated) training potential and love of exploring. As a young, apparently healthy adult dog (no flags on his exam) Stromboli has many years of love and fun ahead of him!

Behavioral:
Per volunteer on 9/14: Stromboli tried to dodge the leash a few times but then allowed leashing and hopped right out of his kennel. He was pretty easy on leash- he pulls minimally but responds to vocal cues and redirection with leash pressure. He waited until we got outside to go potty so may be housetrained! He seemed to have an upset belly. Super treat motivated! Not very interested in toys. Took some pets but was much more interested in treats. He didn't seem to know sit or any commands. He jumped up for treats but remained gentle with it. When there were sudden noises and movements outside he startled and jumped but then relaxed quickly. He was focused on every smell in the play yard and on our walk. He seemed to fixate on the birds in the play run but never ran after them. No issues going back inside!

Per staff on 9/9: During a dog meet attempt Stromboli was initially wiggly and interested in the other dog but then lunged at his face without much warning. I pulled the other dog away and then Stromboli growled and lunged again at him before disengaging and walking away.

Per staff on 9/5:
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
In kennel Stromboli was on the opposite end of the kennel and came to the front wagging when he saw the handler. He was wiggly when he saw the handler and allowed for easy leashing without any issues. No issues exiting or returning
LEASH SKILLS:
-Pulled minimally

HANDLING:
In the yard Stromboli sniffed around and explored his surroundings. He sniffed around the yard for several minutes and ignoring us when called over or offered treats. After he explored he came back over to us wagging with mid level wags and soft eyes. He allowed us both to pet him and leaned in when petting him. He was also treat motivated and took them very gently when offered!

PLAY
-No interest

TOYS:
No interest

Per staff on 9/4: sweet and wiggly puppy energy, allowed all handling with no issue. Apparently both dogs are very prey driven with cats. Very sweet with people

Due to ACCT being significantly over capacity with dogs and cats, timestamps may be proceeded with early so it is imperative to let us know if you are considering adopting or tagging a dog or cat. If you are interested in an animal please contact ACCT Philly immediately. Confirmed placement is considered confirmation of an actual rescue pull. Possible placement, interested parties, and other "TBD" statuses are not considered confirmed and do not indicate an animal is no longer urgent. If you are a rescue interested in pulling this animal, please email our lifesaving team, or visit here if you are not currently a rescue partner: https://acctphilly.org/acct-philly-love-local-partnership-program/ . All animals at ACCT Philly are from Philadelphia; as the only open intake animal shelter in Philadelphia, we are not able to accept animals from outside of Philadelphia. ACCT Philly's Pennsylvania kennel license number is 08313.

ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia. We are open for adoptions 7 days a week. Please visit www.acctphilly.org/adopt for details.
