My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This is Heidi; she’s very bright eyed, but not bushy tailed unless something startles her! She’s rambunctious in a particularly cute way, playful, curious and quite sweet as well. Her favorite things in life (in order) are: spring toys, mousey toys, staring out the back door at critters, stealing dried cod treats from the dog’s treat jar, tackling her beleaguered foster sister, trying to find the toys she lost, and petulantly asking for more wet cat food. She is spritely quick, bouncy, and definitely needs a home with a lot of stimulation - preferably in the form of another young feline-friendly cat.

Heidi got her name because she spent her first 2 weeks hiding in her foster mom's basement - neither hide nor hair to be seen. By 4 weeks in she was purring in her arms and by 4 months she had taken over the household. Recently she has finally become more confident around strangers although she’s not a “walk right up and rub your leg type.” And, she’s more comfortable when her foster mom is around.

She will probably take over your house too in the most endearing way possible, but you’ll need to give her some time to get comfortable. If you're the patient type, she's worth the wait!

Markings-wise she’s sleek and exotic looking (she is not actually an exotic cat!) with dark swirls and stripes on a pretty gray background. Note that she lives with a 65lb dog and they’ve always been fine with each other - she even tries to sneak a cuddle here and there. If your dog is friendly with cats, she should be fine with them.

Heidi's estimated age is about 6 months, and her adoption fee of $185 includes: Vet exam, Feleuk/FIV test, FVRCP (distemper combo) vaccinations, rabies vaccination, routine dewormings, flea/tick control, microchip and spay. She is completely vetted and ready to go!

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process: Adopt-A-Pet does not own a shelter facility. Because all of our animals are in private foster homes, they are shown by appointment, after an application has been submitted.

How to start the process: Contact us by email or phone. An adoption counselor will return your message within 1-2 days. You will be asked to fill out an application that will ask for personal information about your family, your home and about the kind of pet you're looking for. Vet references, personal references and landlord information (if applicable) is required. You can also download an application from our website. Once you return the application, an adoption counselor will call you back for a more thorough interview, again within 1-2 days. Sometimes it may take a little longer as we're all volunteers and sometimes it gets very busy. Assuming the pet you're interested in appears to be a match for you, a meeting will then be set up. For some animals, a home check may be required. If an adoption takes place, you will be asked to sign a contract and pay an adoption fee. Each animal's individual adoption fee is posted in its description on our websites.

More about this rescue

ADOPT-A-PET is an all-volunteer non-profit animal shelter/adoption agency dedicated to saving the lives of lost, abandoned or otherwise homeless dogs, cats, puppies and kittens and placing them into permanent, loving homes.

ADOPT-A-PET provides a safe refuge and a second chance for unclaimed animals from various municipal pounds and, space permitting, accepts other homeless, neglected or injured animals from their rescuers.

ADOPT-A-PET was founded in 1981, and has since saved the lives of over 15,000 animals. All animals at Adopt-A-Pet are found permanent loving homes. Animals remain with us for as long as it takes to find them a suitable permanent new home.

ADOPT-A-PET does not own a shelter facility. All of our animals are boarded at co-operating animal hospitals or in volunteer foster homes until they are adopted by their new families.

ADOPT-A-PET provides all necessary medical care for every animal. All animals are health-checked, vaccinated, treated for medical problems and spayed/neutered.

ADOPT-A-PET is available for educational speaking engagements to schools and community groups in Chicago or the suburbs to promote proper pet care, compassion for animals, and the importance of spaying and neutering.
