Meet Big Boy! This awesome pup ended up in a rural county shelter as an adolescent, failed by adopters who were not committed or ready for puppy mode. Their loss will be someone else’s gain. We’ve gotten to know Big Boy and he’s an incredibly sweet, trusting, and good-natured pup. He’s a fun-loving, goofy boy who has maintained a positive outlook on life’s adventures. He loves people and has excellent doggy social skills.
Big Boy lucked out when he caught the eye of one of our seasoned SC foster moms, Laine, who also volunteers at the shelter. She wanted to help him, and after seeing him in regular doggy play groups, felt he would fit in well with her pack. Big Boy started his rescue journey being fostered by Laine, Gary, and their pack of three GSDs. He did great there, learned the rules of home life, and did well as part of a pack.
In June, Big Boy came to N. VA to start his new life and is being fostered by our go-to trainer, Alexa. We usually give Alexa pups who need more rehabilitation than a typical foster family can give, and she always does a fabulous job. This time she wanted to foster a fun family dog for a change of pace and Big Boy was perfect. Alexa has two kids, two dogs, and two cats, and Big Boy is respectful to all and has fit in well. He’s such a natural with other dogs, he’s a great playmate for the client dogs Alexa boards and trains.
Big Boy is housetrained and crate-trained. He LOVES toys of all kinds, playing chase in the backyard, and frolicking in the resident kiddy pool. He can be vocal when he plays with the other dogs but it’s just his style. He likes to talk to them and knows to respect their boundaries. Big Boy has spurts of energy but can also be chill inside the home…he’s more of a moderate-energy dog who loves to play.
We think Big Boy is a Husky mixed with a Greyhound. He’s tall, but has a svelte build and is all legs! Big Boy is an active pup who loves to play and would love a doggie playmate in his new home. Alexa is working on his recall and leash skills.
We checked in with Alexa for a quick update:
“Big Boy is such a gem of a dog. He’s a really good boy! He wasn't nervous when he first arrived but needed some guidance. I kept him close by me for the first few days so he could get an understanding of our home and how things work here. After day three, it was like he had been living here his whole life.
He’s done great with my kids and the pack. He is super friendly to dogs, people, and cats. He has also met client dogs and had a buddy Bernadoodle stay with us over the holiday week. They did a lot of romping and playing in the yard and he had a blast. He’s a natural with other dogs, very respectful, and takes corrections well from any animal.
I think Big Boy needs a fun, active handler, and another dog in the home to play with would be ideal. He makes such a great dog buddy. His leash skills improve every time we go out and he’s so trainable. He really wants to please his person and is very food-motivated. We are really enjoying him!”

Thank you for considering adoption and choosing to save a dog’s life!
Adding a dog to your family is a rewarding and life-changing experience. Dogs enrich our lives and have the amazing ability to give and receive love unconditionally. They can be your loyal companion and friend, and a watchful playmate for your kids, but they are also a serious, long-term commitment. They will depend on you for their health and well-being, and require an investment of love, time, and money for the rest of their life.
As you search for your new dog, please remember that there is no shortage of dogs who need saving. There are far more dogs waiting to be adopted than people who are willing to adopt them, so if the dog in the picture who you’ve imagined bringing home isn’t available, there are thousands more amazing, loving dogs just hoping for the chance to be your dog. We ask that you keep an open mind, stay flexible, and we will do our best to work with you to find a great match for your family.
We strongly encourage anyone thinking about adopting a dog to do your research and make sure you are prepared for the commitment. If you have thought about what’s required and are ready to adopt, here’s what you can expect when you apply to adopt a dog from Worthy Dog Rescue.
Worthy Dog Rescue cannot guarantee that the dog you apply for will be available once you have been approved. We do our best to work with adopters and meet your needs, but we do not adopt dogs on a first-come, first-serve basis. All applications are screened to determine the most suitable match for the dog and the adopter. We want to place dogs in good homes as quickly as possible, so the dog can start their new life with their family, and we can free up their foster home to save another dog in need.
We understand how easy it is to become attached to a dog you’ve found online, but sometimes the dog you apply for may already be scheduled to meet another adopter, or it may not be the best fit for your home for a variety of behavioral reasons. Our dogs are fostered by one of our volunteers, living in their home as part of their family. This allows us to get to know the dog, what they need, their level of socialization, and the type of home that will best suit them.
Our goal is to place dogs in loving, responsible, and committed permanent homes. We take great care in finding good matches for our dogs and adopters too. We look forward to working with you to find the dog that will be with you and your family for many years to come.
