My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Lane came to us as a stray dog. While he most certainly had a home, we were unable to find his owners. He was not in the best condition and suffered from neglect but surely he was loved as he is so loving to people. He greets you up on two legs happily bouncing to announce his joy of your arrival. He responds gregariously to your happy voice and encouragement. Lane also feels better now as he had his horribly rotten teeth cleaned and extracted as needed. Lane is estimated to be 10 years old and while his clouded eyes make him look older, his jubilant personality makes him seem much younger. Lane deserves a home where he will be so loved and well cared for. He is a very slight guy weighing about 9 lbs and an absolute peach on the grooming table. We will certainly miss this exhuberant dog when he leaves us but we know he will bring his new owners as much joy as we hope they have to offer him.

Like many of our rescue dogs, we are not sure how well house trained Lane is. But with gentle persuasion, some consistency, structure and praise he should be easy to train.

Lane is a coated dog (hair grows continuously) and will need professional grooming every 6-8 weeks.

Lane's adoption fee is $325

This fee includes at least one health exam at our veterinarian while in our care, altering, all vaccinations including rabies (as permitted by age), a pre-adoption professional grooming and a microchip with lifetime membership that never will cost you a fee.

All dogs also leave with a new collar and or harness and leash as well as a gift bag which includes among other things, a starter bag of the quality kibble that is being fed at the rescue.

Adoption fees also allow us the ability to put funds towards the next homeless or unwanted dog in need of rescue!
If you would like to be considered to for this adoption or any of our amazing rescues, please fill out the application with the help of this link. https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/AZST/Dog.

We review each application carefully. Please understand that sometimes we get numerous applications for specific dogs and as a volunteer-based rescue, we do not always have the time to respond to each one. We do our best to choose the most suitable home for each dog based on their specific personality and needs.

Please note you MAY NOT be contacted for up to 10 days to schedule a meet and greet if your family is the most suitable for this rescue dog. Regrettably, we do not have the manpower currently to contact all applicants. We keep ALL applications in our database so please feel free to
contact us when you see another dog of interest. We appreciate all applicants and do our best to pair every dog and family for a successful and happy life.

Go meet their pets

We are a Not for Profit, foster and volunteer based private rescue which means we do not have a brick and mortar building to visit our rescue animals.

All of our rescues live in an "in home" rescue or with their foster family to provide a safe and quiet family life which in turn makes it easier for them to transition into their forever homes. They receive love and attention, learn how to cohabitate with other dogs and sometimes cats, house training, medical care (if needed), grooming etc.

We process all of our applications to be sure to match up the right family with each of our rescues. Once a match is found, we contact you right away, and set up a meet and greet.

We do not contact you if your application was declined and your family and life style was not the right fit to meet the needs of the rescue pup you applied for.

** Please note that we do not adopt out of the state of Arizona **

During the cooler months, we have Meet and Greets at:
our rescue home base near the 51 Freeway and Greenway road OR Roadrunner Park located at 32nd Street and Cactus conveniently located right off State Route 51 in Phoenix. We work with your schedule, so meetings are done 7 days a week.

More about this rescue

Arizona Shih Tzu Rescue is a 501(c)3 Non Profit dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of Shih Tzu as well as small purebred and mixed breed dogs.

We rescue Shih Tzus as well as other small breeds such as Lhasa Apso, Poodles, Yorkies, Chihuahuas, Maltese, Bichon, Schnauzers, and Terriers. We rescue pure as well as mixed breed dogs of all ages...and have been known to take a bigger dog or two....and a few kittens that strangers have dropped off at our doorstep with no where else to go.

Many of our rescues are "medical needs" dogs - meaning they come to us in significant medical need as a result of long term abuse and neglect.

We believe that somewhere there is a famiy for every dog, but that we have a responsibility to place our dogs into homes that will best meet their needs both physically and emotionally. We look for people with patient and loving hearts and an understanding of the furbaby mind.

Abuse, neglect, irresponsible breeding, puppy mills, financial difficulties, changes in family circumstances, births, illness and death of guardians are all contributors to the large population of homeless dogs and some of the reasons we find so many dogs in shelters and rescue groups.

Look at all those little faces on our web site and then ask yourself, "Why should I adopt a rescued dog?"

We are also committed to educating potential adopters about the importance of ethical, responsible and humane pet guardianship. We have the unique ability to train 'littles' that are deemed untrainable. We also provide grooming services and boarding.

We are a Private, Not for Profit 501(c)(3), all Foster and Volunteer based Rescue. We do not have a physical brick and mortar building for you to visit, so we do not have paid Staff.

** Please note that we do not adopt out of the state of Arizona **

Everything we are able to do is made possible by our volunteers. Volunteers who donate their time to foster, visit, clean, feed, play and/or walk our rescue "kids".

We also are able to rescue solely because of the money that comes in the form of Adoption fees and your donations. Our adoption fees and donations go directly back into the rescue. It is with this money that we are able to rescue the next little one that finds him or herself without a home.

And for that we are grateful to you.
