My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Look out Stagger Lee 🤠 Stagger Lee was a member of the Wharf Cats. A group of over 25 cats & kittens removed from a hoarding situation local to the shelter. Stagger Lee and his gang found themselves safe at the shelters, but they were very scared and confused. We had to close off an entire room in the shelter while these cats decompressed, learned to use to litterbox for the first time, and got used to eating regular cat food. They were under socialized and terrified but thanks to the patience of our staff & volunteers, one by one they came out of their shells, and turned into adoptable cats. Stagger Lee can still be a bit shy, but he allows us to pet him and is warming up to people everyday. We know you won't truly see his personality until he is out of the cage, so let's get him in a home!

More about this shelter

The Associated Humane Societies rescues stray and homeless animals, both domestic and wildlife, providing quality care and sanctuary until loving homes can be found. As a community-based organization, we provide low-cost veterinary care and humane education to promote responsible pet guardianship throughout New Jersey.

For over a century we have offered a haven to abused and neglected animals. Founded in 1906, AHS is the largest animal sheltering system in New Jersey, operating three shelters located in Newark, Forked River, and Tinton Falls. Our Forked River facility also includes Popcorn Park. Established in 1977, Popcorn Park is a sanctuary for abandoned, injured, ill, exploited, abused, or elderly wildlife, exotic and farm animals, and birds.

The Society is a not-for-profit, 501(c)3 organization and we take pride in our devotion to the thousands of animals that come through our doors looking for a better life.
