In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!
Petty is a male, 14 pound Shih Tzu/Bichon mix (also known as a teddy bear) born in December, 2023. He was surrendered to rescue because his previous family was not able to devote enough attention to him due to having a new baby and their changing work schedules.
Petty is playful and loves to retrieve toys and balls. He spends considerable time handing his foster parents one of his toys so they will toss it for him to retrieve. He enjoys walks, and his foster parents usually walk him two times per day, up to a mile and a half each time. He loves to greet other dogs when going on walks, and is always friendly and welcoming. They also take him out about every 4-5 hours during the day and make sure that he goes potty. He enjoys exploring the back yard, and a fenced yard in which to relish having the freedom to explore off leash, while supervised would be perfect for him.
Petty is a young little tyke, but very smart! He has learned commands such as “sit, down, stay and come”. He loves to please and would thrive with a family who is enthusiastic and will help him learn more. A puppy obedience class would be great for him, so we are hoping that his new family will continue to help him learn to become a stellar canine citizen and a wonderful family member. He follows his foster parents around the house and truly wants to be with them at all times.
His foster dad says that Petty enjoys riding in the car, and will sit in the back seat quietly while looking out the window. But he thinks that Petty would prefer actually driving instead! Petty wants to go wherever you go, so having a family who will include, and enjoy, having him in their daily activities would be ideal for him. He is very affectionate and his family is the center of his life.
Following are the requirements for Petty’s new family:
· Petty is still a puppy. Because Shih Tzus often live 16+ years, applications will only considered from age appropriate individuals who will be able to provide the care and activity necessary for the rest of his life.
· A family who can be home with Petty for much of the day for companionship and also to enable him to go outside every 4-5 hours during the day.
· Petty needs an active family who can provide, and enjoys, the high energy of a puppy. This includes long, brisk, daily walks and providing training, activity and the stimulation needed for a dog of his age.
· A secure fenced yard would be great, but is not a deal breaker as long as Petty can have other means of outdoor activity.
· An adults only family, or one with children over the age of 10 who have experience and understand how to interact with a small dog, will be considered.
· Petty does well with other small dogs in the family, but he would be perfectly fine as an only pet. If there are other dogs in the family, it would be best if they have a similar energy level and engagement as Petty.
· Live within 30 miles of Inver Grove Heights, MN.
· Agree to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September each year.
Petty is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm/flea preventative. His adoption fee is $470.00 plus $40.07, for a total of $510.07.
To meet Petty, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southdale PetCo in Bloomington, MN.
