My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!

Maycie and Teddy are an adorable bonded pair of siblings who are ready to bring their playful and loving energy into your home! At around 11 pounds each, they are the perfect size for cuddles and playtime. They were surrendered to rescue because their previous family had very young children and consequently Maycie and Teddy came second to the children. The family didn’t have the time to devote to Maycie and Teddy, and the children were to too young to understand how to interact with dogs, creating a negative experience for the dogs.

Maycie is a charming, 6 year old little lady with a soft tan and white coat that perfectly complements her big, expressive puppy dog eyes. She is full of life and loves to be playful, with a particular fondness for toys, fetching with her mini tennis balls, and chasing bunnies in the yard. Maycie is also a cuddle enthusiast, often found snuggling up with her foster dad or keeping watch by the bay window. She’s doing great with potty training and is always excited for mealtime - dinner is definitely one of her favorite parts of the day.

Teddy, with his cool chocolate and silvery coat, brings a calm and gentle presence to the pair. He is 5 years old. His sweet, soft stares are his way of communicating what he wants, and he loves to snuggle under a blanket with his human companions. Teddy is very much a follower of his sister Maycie and loves to mimic her playful antics. Breakfast is his favorite meal, and he enjoys going for walks and joining in on all the fun.

Together, Maycie and Teddy make a fantastic duo who adore each other and their human companions. They get along wonderfully with their foster siblings and are friendly towards everyone they meet, whether human or dog. They are excellent walkers (though their manners would benefit from some leash training) and are always eager to jump in the car for a ride. They are both doing great with potty training and enjoy exploring the yard! In their previous home, they did not have a good experience with small children, so for that reason they would do best in a home where there are no small children, whether living there or visiting.

The following are requirements for Maycie and Teddy’s adoption:

· An active family who will include both Maycie and Teddy in their daily activities and give them plenty of playtime and exercise. They need a family who is home much of the day and will give them the attention and love they deserve - they always want to be with their family.

· Because they do not do well with small children, an adults only home would be best for them. But a family with children over the age of ten, who understand how to be gentle and respectful of small dogs, will be considered.

· Maycie and Teddy love to cuddle, so their new family should be ready for lots of snuggling, whether it’s on the couch or under the bed blankets. They're often found nestled under their foster dad's work desk, gently asking to be held throughout the day!

· They love each other and are used to being the only pets in the house, but could also get along well with another small, friendly canine companion.

· They would really enjoy having a fenced yard, but would be fine in a home where they get frequent walks.

· Live within 30 miles of Roseville, MN.

· Agree to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September each year.

Maycie and Teddy are both spayed and neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Health Note: Both Maycie and Teddy are in great health. Teddy has a history of liver shunt surgery, but recent blood work shows he is doing exceptionally well and there is little concern for this condition. Both dogs are scheduled for dentals on October 11th with the rescue’s veterinarian, which will be covered by the rescue. Teddy will also have a cherry eye repair done at the same time as his dental work.

Their adoption fee is $640.00 plus $46.04 in sales tax, totaling $686.04. To meet them, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see them and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southdale PetCo in Bloomington, MN.

Maycie and Teddy are eager to start the next chapter of their lives with a loving family. If you think you can provide them with a wonderful home, they would love to meet you

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

The first part of the adoption process is to submit an APPLICATION FOR ADOPTION online at www.shihtzurescuemn.org.

Once you have completed and submitted the application, it will be reviewed by an application committee who will decide if it is an appropriate application for one of our Shih Tzus or for a particular dog in which you are interested.

The application gives us an idea of your living situation, your family, your lifestyle, and what you are really looking for in a companion. As everyone knows, the requirements and expectations for dogs all vary, and like humans, each one has its own character and personality. With regards to dogs, some are mellow and just need a place where they can be a companion to people and relax and live out their lives. Others are more active or like the companionship of another dog. But they all need to be in homes where they are understood and loved unconditionally.

After reviewing the adoption application, an adoption coordinator will call for a phone interview to chat further about the dog and you. Upon completion of the phone interview we check your references to make sure that you are, in fact, who you represent yourself to be as both a person and prospective dog parent.

The next step is to verify your living situation. Once again, all dogs have different requirements, an example being that some dogs really need to go to homes where a fenced yard is available, whereas others are fine without a fenced yard. We also need to make sure that you are the owner of the home that you reside in, and if you are not, then we need to get consent from your landlord that the dog you are looking to adopt will be allowed in your home.

Finally, we will do a visit to your home, where all family members must be present, and you will get to meet the dog you are considering. Hopefully the visit will tell us that this is the match we hope it will be! At that point, if it is true love, then you may welcome your fantastic new Shih Tzu into your home for the beginning of what we are certain will be a wonderful, loving forever relationship. Please understand that it is the decision of the foster parent as to whether the family, home and dog are an appropriate match.

We require that you sign our adoption agreement and pay the adoption fee for the dog. All dogs adopted from us are fully vetted (vaccinated, heartworm tested, dewormed (if necessary), and spayed/neutered). The adoption fee is based on the age of the dog and ranges from $100 to $400.

More about this rescue

Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota (STRMN) is an all volunteer organization with a mission to Rescue, Rehabilitate, and Re-Home Shih Tzus and Shih Tzu mixes who are in need of loving homes. We believe every dog should have a second chance, and should be treated as a living creature with respect, dignity and compassion. While our volunteers are located in Minnesota, we are committed to rescuing Shih Tzus from other states as well. As long as we have an available foster home, we will rescue and care for another Shih Tzu. STRMN is a 501c3 charitable, non profit organization. All donations to STRMN are tax deductable and 100% of donations go toward the care and comfort of our rescued dogs.
