My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Please contact Janelle (adopt@q.com) for more information about this pet.

Please visit our main website https://almosthomenm.org/   We also offer boarding and have a Facebook page with photos and stories.

Be aware birthdays and breeds listed are our best guesses based on looks - we seldom know this information unless they come in with registration papers.

Approximate DOB 10/16/2023

Approximate Adult Size - Small (about 9 lbs when picked up- he will be weighed again for his neuter)

History- We saw a post on FB from another rescue down south that they were dealing with a hoarding situation and needed help from other rescues t take some of the dogs in. Since we had just brought in 7 I really didn't have the space so I didn't respond. But I went to bed thinking about these dogs and asked God for a sign how I could help. Crazy! That morning I woke up to a text -  our boarding kennel had a cancellation so I pretty much took it as a sign. I messaged the other rescue still hoping that all the dogs had found rescues to accept them. Sadly the rescue replied that all the local rescues were full but some were able to squeeze a few in but they were reaching out to surrounding out of state rescues for assistance. I told them if all else fails we could take 4-5 if they had no other options. Well, they responded that they had a bunch left so we agreed for them to send some up on transport. That weekend Kimber, Jessie, Max, and Bandit made their way to us. Luckily another rescuer was at the transport also receiving dogs from the same case and he offered to help me move mine from the transporters crates to mine as mine were older dogs and more of a flight risk if they got loose. So here they are we made it home and we've been working with them on socialization. They get their medical this Friday and then will be looking for their happily ever afters.

Temperament- Still very shy and scared when meeting people but he is trying. This guy wants so badly to be loved but is just still so worried about trusting people. Once we corner him and pet him and give him cookies then he will start giving little kisses and sit with me but I have to kind of show him every single time that there is nothing to be scared of. When he first got here he was so scared he was trying to climb the kennel walls to escape and just ran and ran and ran around the kennel. He was terrified so we are making progress just a little slower than the others.

Energy Level- At this point he is very mellow however I do think that will change in time since he is so young. I think right now he mainly just lays in the corner so we won't acknowledge him and will just leave him alone to observe the world around him.

Dogs/Cats- Seems to enjoy the company of the other 3 dogs he came in with but he really doesn't seem to want to play with them at this point. I do think he plays when I am not out there but once he sees people he goes to his corner.

Housetrained- He is currently using a dog door perfectly to go out to potty. However, and this is huge, we are recommending a few things to prevent unwanted frustration. A belly band in the house when he is loose and not being watched as he does mark. You see when dogs come from a hoarding case with 30 dogs all inside with no way to go out to potty and nobody spayed or neutered they all start marking everything in the home!! I love this boy to pieces and I am hoping with his upcoming neuter it will slow it down. However,  due to growing up in that environment with no correction for it his whole life and with so many other dogs in a house all marking he probably should not be in a home with other male dogs otherwise it will definitely be a competition and you may always have this issue. He will have less of a desire to mark if there are no other males to compete with. He should be either crated or leashed to his new owner at all times initially so marking can be quickly caught and corrected to prevent it from becoming a habit for him in his new home. Upon saying that it can be fixed as long as it is corrected every single time and like I said make sure you have a belly band at least initially that only comes off when he is outside, being watched, or is in a crate. This will also correct him as he will not like the feeling of wetting his pants so to speak.

This little guy is super cute and I believe he will come around in time. He has the sweetest gentlest eyes he is just so worried about this change. You have to remember he lived in a house with 30 dogs his entire life so he probably didn't get much attention. But he does enjoy it once we get past that initial fear issue every time we walk in. I think he just needs more time and one on one time to get past this hurtle. He will make someone who is patient, loving, and quiet a wonderful companion if they are willing to just give him a chance and earn his trust. He will have a 2 month trial for a full refund due to his fear issues.

Adoption fee $200 includes neuter, age appropriate vaccinations (4 for puppies), deworming, microchip, rabies, collar and leash, training information, and all the support you need.

If you would like to adopt from out of state then you must be willing to come out to meet and adopt the pet you are interested in.. We do not ship pets nor will we meet someone somewhere.. We want adopters to come out and spend at least an hour with this pet in their environment before adopting just to ensure there is a connection. We would hate for the adoption to not work and be so far away.

More about this rescue

We are a newly formed rescue in Peralta, NM. We are still very small and currently in process of getting our 501c3 tax exempt status. It is mainly just myself, my two daughters and a small group of volunteers. We only take in animals from shelters who are scheduled to be put down. All animals are housed in my home and on my property. We started this rescue due to the simple fact that there are so many wonderful dogs dying everyday at the shelters because there just isn't enough room.We do not discriminate against any breed. Every dog has the potential to be a great family pet, working dog, or therapy dog- just as every dog has the potential to become a "dangerous dog" due to the simple fact that they all (or most anyway) have teeth and can bite when provoked or trained to obey their owners commands.
We do it for the love of the animals and the need to find forever homes for the ones impounded due to no fault of their own.
