FOSTER COMMENTS:

Hunter is a very special boy who needs a very special human to love and continue to train him. He is a very energetic young dog who still has a lot of puppy left in him. Hunter was found as a stray and taken to a rural shelter extremely underweight.  He spent two and a half months in the shelter before being pulled by BFPA, which was likely very stressful.  His fosters think that he never got a chance to be a puppy and is finally able to behave like one.

Hunter has made extreme progress with his foster family, but needs an experienced dog owner who has extra time to work on his training and manners. Hunter absolutely loves going for a run or long walk in the morning. When his fosters work from home, he lies nicely on the couch and waits for a break to go outside and play. He is an avid hiker in the making and absolutely thrives on adventures. He rides nicely in the car. He is housebroken and will go in his crate without issue but is not much of a fan of the crate. He is not crated at night and sleeps nicely on the couch with no issues. His fosters have a hybrid work schedule, and he has been doing well being left alone for up to five hours.

Hunter will bring constant companionship to a potential adopter as he stays close to his fosters and will follow them all around the house. He loves to play with toys and would love a very active person who would include him in their adventures. Although he wants to be close to his people when he is tired, he does not like to be petted when he is sleepy.

Hunter doesn't do well with small dogs or cats.  He has interacted well with larger dogs he has met on walks. He loves playing with his foster sister, but (although much improved) cannot always understand cues that playing is finished. He also lives with another dog who does not appreciate his high energy level, but he has learned to mostly leave her alone. He will do best as either an only dog or living with a very patient, playful larger dog. Although he wags his tail when he sees kids, his play biting and jumping currently make him an unsuitable companion for very young people. He still gets overly excited when new people come to visit. He is very food motivated, which is a big help with his training.

Because of his high energy level and vocal protests when left alone, he may not work well in an apartment or townhouse. He would do best with a fenced yard as he enjoys getting his zoomies out several times a day in the backyard.

Hunter has made so much progress in his short time with BFPA and it should continue with a great family willing to love him and continue his training.  He deserves nothing less. If you want a companion on your life adventures set up a time to meet this sweet boy who deserves a forever home.

Some of the information contained in this biography includes approximations based on our expertise and is not guaranteed.

Applicants should live no further than one hour from Cary NC as our dogs must be seen by a BFPA veterinarian for all medical care prior to adoptions being finalized after the trial period.   Our foster guardians deliver dogs to their new homes for adoption trials and we do home visits to finalize all adoptions.  We therefore require applicants to live within an hours drive of Cary NC.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

All of our adoptions require submission of an application which is processed and and must be approved by our adoption coordinator. Potential adopters then take the animal on a trial (minimum of 2 weeks) before the adoption is finalized. This helps to ensure a good fit between the adopting family and the animal. All animals must be up to date on all vaccinations, spayed/neutered, and microchipped before the adoption can be finalized. Adoption fee is $225 for dogs, $115 for cats.

More about this rescue

Best Friend Pet Adoption (BFPA) is a no-kill animal rescue organization based in central North Carolina. BFPA has no building, office, or shelter. We are an all-foster network committed to helping dogs and cats in need of homes. Individual donations are our most important source of income as we receive no public funding.

Our purpose is to provide medical assistance, foster homes, and adoption services to previously lost, abandoned, abused, or neglected animals in Wake County, NC and the surrounding counties. Our mission is to educate this disposable society in which we live that every life should be valued and cherished and is directly linked to human responsibility and commitment.

Almost all the animals we rescue require immediate medical attention. BFPA never turns away or euthanizes an animal because of the expense involved in returning them to good health. All our rescued animals are evaluated for temperament, examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, microchipped (if possible) and sterilized, if age appropriate. Cats and dogs receive monthly flea/tick preventative and dogs also receive monthly heartworm preventative.

The most important ingredients we provide to these animals are loving care and a safe haven -- something most of them have never experienced. These cats and dogs live in volunteer foster homes until we find them a loving permanent home, however long it takes. We match these precious beings to a single, couple or family who understand cats and dogs should be full participating members of the family. Our hope is that these animals never have to experience being unloved again.

Since our beginning, BFPA has rescued and placed thousands of cats and dogs into their forever homes.

BFPA was created in 1998 by two Raleigh-area women who had volunteered with other established rescues in the Triangle. Their dedication to help homeless dogs and cats has led to an organization that has grown to over 225 volunteers strong.

BFPA received 501(c)(3) status in 1999.
