Snowball ACCT-A-120914 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Snowball must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by Tuesday, October 1st at 10 A.M. Should Snowball's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Meet Snowball, a resilient young female husky with a heartwarming story. Originally brought to the shelter in August 2022 after police found her tied to a fence, Snowball's life has had its challenges. After being returned to her owner, she was found again, possibly after being hit by a car, and brought back to the shelter by a kind-hearted Good Samaritan.
Despite her rough past, Snowball has shown incredible strength and sweetness. She's a bit shy at first, but once she warms up, she becomes a gentle, loving companion. Snowball loves treats and knows how to sit, always taking them gently. She enjoys walks and pulls only moderately on the leash, making her an easy companion with the right harness. She's also shown great potential in dog meets, greeting other dogs with a wagging tail and excitement.
Though she can be nervous around new people and sensitive to touch, especially around her ears and backside, Snowball is food motivated and responsive to positive reinforcement. She gives clear signals when she's uncomfortable, making her a great candidate for someone who understands huskies and their reserved nature.
Snowball has faced some physical challenges, including mild discomfort in her right leg, but with the right care, she's well on her way to healing. This quiet and curious girl is ready for a fresh start in a loving home where she can feel safe and comfortable. She is recommended for a home with children 15 and older.

Behavior Notes:
Per staff on 9/28: Snowball went out for her photo shoot 9/25 and was a perfect baby girl. When taking her out of kennel she was at the front waiting patiently with a wagging tail and neutral eyes. she walk well on leash and only pulled when we were close to the door to outside. We went into the eval room for pictures and she did so well and was called "the most perfect husky yet". She stood still for her photos, giving them smiles and kisses, wagging her tail and even allowing slow but all over pets (including her face). She did very well and due to this and further improvement to her behavior she can be bumped down.
Per volunteer 9/21/24: I had a great outing with Snowball today! She was very easy to leash and walked out of the kennel with no issues. Outside she spent some time in the play yard exploring the smells as I spoke with another volunteer. I took some treats out and she came right up to me and showed me that she knows sit! She took treats super gently. On leash she pulled moderately but was easy to direct- with a harness she'd be great. She did really well meeting a few different dogs through the fence- always had a loose wagging tail and remained very loose. No issues going back inside
Per staff 9/16/24: Snowball was easy to remove from kennel and walked well on leash. I did not attempt handling, but she was great for her dog meet! She ignored the other dog through the gate and then when we proceeded to a face meet, she got really excited with a few episodes of zoomies. She walked well back to her kennel and I was able to put her in and unleash her without issues.
Per staff 9/12/24: Unable to give buprenorphine last night. When attempting to give shot dog bit me (did not break skin only left small bruise)
Per staff 8/29/24: KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Snowball was standing by the door, tense neutral eyes, backed up when the kennel door was opened, a little nervous of the leash but once secured she came trotting out

HANDLING:
Snowball came in very curious and quiet. She was conflicted with touch, allowing us to pet her head (sensitive around her ears) and back. She doesn't want to take treats sometimes and gets nervous around new people but warms up. She is protective of her backside and will move away from the handlers being behind her. She is food motivated, knows down and sit, and is a reserved and quiet husky. She tolerates touch on her wounds but lip licked and cried - did not escalate. She gives signals when she is uncomfortable without escalating further.

Per staff 8/28/24: Unable to obtain xrays at this time due to behavior. dog was easy to get from kennel to xray room but once in the room when attempting to pick the dog up to be put on the table turned and snapped at handler. Patient was easy to muzzle but even with muzzle on dog thrashed when tryin to be picked up, was able to get it on the xray table but continued to thrash was unable to position dog for xray. stopped attempting due to behavior and dog almost rolling off the table
Per staff 8/28/24: Did very well with all handling and restraint. Food motivated, likes cream cheese, takes treats nicely.

Medical Notes:
9/16/24: Ambulatory x4, no overt lameness. Initially hesitant to extension of R coxofemoral joint, able to be comfortably extended/flexed later in exam. Mild repeatable discomfort associated with R stifle joint on manipulation. No overt fractures palpated.
Cardiac/respiratory auscultation WNL
Assessment: Intermittent discomfort R stifle, no lameness - r/o arthritis vs partial CCL vs less likely fracture vs other
9/5/24: This dog has been observed to have shelter acquired upper respiratory infection (URI), or a "doggy cold". They have been started on medication, and will be monitored for resolution of the respiratory infection.
8/28/24: Possible HBC (Hit by car) - Dried blood on hind left paw. Limping on hind right leg with wound on inner thigh and inflammation. Hairloss on left eye
